Job description

Nursing Informatics Specialist

LECOM Health is seeking a dedicated informatics nurse to support clinical and operational excellence across multiple healthcare facilities within our growing health system.

OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB:

Plans, implements, tests and documents new, enhanced or existing nursing and physician documentation systems, integration with ancillary and revenue cycle systems and related education strategies to meet the needs of system users, and hospital administration and all state and federal regulations associated with LECOM Health System’s nursing and physician solutions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

  • Utilizes clinical practice knowledge to collaborate, consult with, and partner with Nursing, Physician and IT leadership in the design, implementation, management and education of new, enhanced, or existing nursing and physician systems to improve efficiency/workflow and patient safety.
  • Assumes project implementation responsibilities as assigned to ensure system objectives are met within budget and on schedule; establishes acceptance criteria for measuring successful completion of informatics projects.
  • Works with I.T. staff and Departmental customers to design and modify systems to meet defined user criteria to include menus, screens, and reports. Identifies data collection techniques and assists with development of procedures to facilitate user department workflow.
  • Ensures all state and federal regulatory system updates are installed and tested prior to the regulatory effective date across all healthcare applications.
  • Prepares and maintains documentation and procedures of systems to ensure intended use and continuity of program maintenance.
  • Develops and performs training and continuing education programs for I.T. staff and systems users to support and utilize newly developed, modified, enhanced or converted systems.
  • Develops test plans for all nursing and physician applications; assists users in executing test plan to ensure proper and error-free execution of application software.
  • Monitors end-user use of systems, identifying coaching opportunities, and fosters effective and efficient use of systems. Identifies end-users learning needs regarding the features and benefits of systems.
  • Analyzes new systems and enhancements and/or corrections to existing systems and provides recommendations of feasibility of implementation to meet I.T. and organizational objectives.
  • Analyzes production application problems and implements and/or assists co-workers and users with the implementation in the resolution of problems.
  • Plans and implements security measures to safeguard the information in computer files against disclosure, accidental or unauthorized modification or destruction, determining cause of corrupted data files and corrects data integrity if software caused.
  • Studies existing information processing to evaluate effectiveness and proposes new systems to improve efficiency/workflow and patient safety.
  • Participates in the department on-call rotation. Responsible for receiving, resolving or reporting issues to the parties responsible to resolve any issue during the rotation according to the I.T. on-call policy and procedure.
  • Provides emergency or backup on-call assistance in the event of systems failure or scheduled maintenance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as may be required to meet emergency situations.
  • Regional travel may be required on an as-needed basis to attend meetings, visit sites, or participate in company-related activities.

Receives instruction and supervision from the IT Director and the LECOM Health leadership teams

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works indoors in adequate office space, with adequate lighting, temperatures and ventilation.
  • Normal exposure to noise and stress, but subject to frequent disruptions.
  • Normal indoor exposure to dust/dirt.
  • Subject to hostile and emotionally upset individuals

PHYSICAL/MENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Must be able to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods throughout the workday with intermittent periods of standing, walking and occasional bending, twisting, stooping and reaching.
  • Dexterity requirements range from simple to coordinated movements of fingers/hands, feet/legs, and torso as necessary to carry out job duties.
  • Sedentary work, with occasional lifting/carrying of objects with a maximum weight of twenty pounds.
  • Must be able to pay close attention to details and concentrate on work.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience; current RN license preferred

  • WORK EXPERIENCE:

Two years clinical informatics experience in an acute care facility or five years experience as a working RN

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Working knowledge of electronic medical record systems and end-user needs and requirements for successful implementation. Knowledge of nursing, instructional design, adult learning principles, education, and training methodologies.
