Description

SUMMARY: National Capital Treatment & Recovery, formerly Phoenix House, a nonprofit substance use treatment facility in Arlington, VA is hiring a Residential Specialist who will be responsible for monitoring the smooth operation of the program. This position assures a safe and drug free environment and provides Life Skills and 12 Step Education. This is a full-time evening, (3pm-11:30pm; Wednesday- Sunday), hourly position. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Monitor therapeutic milieu and patient activities

Conduct random and regular walk-through the program

Respond to patient's crises and emergencies as needed

Demonstrate empathy, compassion, and respect for patients in all interactions

Maintain objectivity towards all patients and make decisions based on accurate information.

Maintain observation of all patient areas to include, dining room, living room, group rooms, patio, and bedrooms to monitor patient activities

Transport patients to outside activities, night AA meetings and appointments as needed

Monitor patients leaving and returning from pass

Organize transportation for patients as necessary, including Taxi Voucher/Medicaid Cab Procedures

Communicate with staff in staff meetings regarding patient participation and patient's progress

Provide patient milieu information in staff log

Document behavioral changes and any behavioral management issues employed with the patient in Welligent and shift log as appropriate

Meet at least monthly with supervisor for supervision

Attend morning shift report to give and receive patient milieu

Attend residential staff, clinical problem-solving meetings, as scheduled

Document significant patient issues in staff log, patient health record (Welligent) and complete Incident Reports as needed in Welligent

Responsible for monitoring and facilitating patient recreation, free time, job function and mealtimes

Present and facilitate Life Skills training and 12 Step Education

Provide information on AA/NA to patients through 12 step education

Conduct orientation for new patients based on program handbook

Maintain urine testing schedule and follow standard procedures in monitoring, documenting and transporting urine to urinalysis facility

Document in Urine Log and prepare specimens for labs. (refer to company policy for laboratory information) Take stat urine as needed

Conduct random search of possessions of patients returning from pass

Conduct random weekly urinalysis of residents, as directed by Residential Manager/Supervisor/Coordinator

As applicable, administer medications including medication pass to patients and count medications at shift change. (Only if successfully completed 32-hour Medication Aid Training) For applicable programs, distribute medication to patients for self-administration according to procedure

Document all medications; report errors or problems to supervisor

Ensure all equipment in sound working condition and reports any problem to supervisor

Ensure new patients have items needed for the first night at the program (i.e., toiletries, linens etc.)

Maintain smooth operation of the program through resident community structure

Remain awake throughout shift

During night shift, make bed checks of all patients at appropriate times

During night shift, use Bed Checklist and note times of rounds, including

a. Insure "lights out" rules are followed

b. Confront inappropriate patient behavior and documents intervention

Respond to medical/psychiatric/behavioral emergencies in an appropriate manner and contacts supervisor, Program Director as needed. Call 911 or employ Taxi Voucher/Medicaid Cab Procedures in non-emergencies

Communicate with supervisor and staff regarding patient related issues

Complete shift with a shift note in staff log to indicate any changes in status of patients and/or facility

Assist Administrative Assistant / Receptionist by breaking down charts and store properly, copying program forms and creating intake

Monitor visitors during weekend visitation, and

a. Require all visitors to sign in and wear visitor badge

b. Assure no visitor enters if under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol

c. Check all resident packages brought into visitation for patients by visitors

d. Monitor activities of patients and visitors to assure program and site/church rules are enforced

Maintain ethical standards and continued professional growth, including

a. Abide by Program and NCTR policy and procedures.

b. Ensure all CARF standards are instituted and maintained

c. Promote, in public and private contacts, the quality standards and ethical practices of NCTR staff.

d. Continue professional growth by attending workshops, trainings and staff trainings to increase skill and knowledge and set appropriate example for staff

e. Maintain current licensure/certification including CES, CPR, First Aid, and 32-hour Medication AID training, Narcan

f. Maintain professional boundaries with staff and patients

g. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor


QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or equivalent

Certification as a substance abuse counselor (CSAC-A, CAC, CSAC), or ability to obtain within 6-months of employment, required

Minimum two (2) years experience working in a substance abuse treatment setting preferred

Knowledge of substance use treatment and of 12 Step recovery process preferred

Possess valid driver's license and safe driving record

Certified in First Aid and CPR, Medication Management a plus

Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus


KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Ability to prepare and maintain required documentation

Ability to comply with state and federal regulations regarding confidentiality

Ability to work and communicate with others. Strong written and verbal communication skills

Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with patients

Possess a thorough knowledge of various treatment methods and experience working with diverse populations.

Strong computer aptitude, including, but not limited to use of email, HRIS timekeeping, documenting in an Electronic Medical Record (EMR)

Comfortable driving a 15-passenger van
