Secondary Life Skills Teacher

We are currently seeking a highly qualified Secondary Life Skills Teacher to join our team and lead our efforts in providing outstanding special education services.

Position Overview:

The Secondary Life Skills Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to secondary school students with significant cognitive or developmental disabilities in a life skills classroom setting. This role involves teaching essential life skills, fostering independence, and promoting students' functional abilities in preparation for transition to post-secondary life.

Key Responsibilities:

Functional Academics Instruction:

• Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) that focus on functional academics, including math, literacy, money management, time telling, and functional reading skills.
• Design and deliver instruction using adapted curriculum materials, hands-on activities, and real-life applications to promote students' understanding and mastery of practical skills.

Daily Living Skills Development:

• Teach essential daily living skills, such as personal hygiene, meal preparation, household chores, and safety practices, to promote independence and self-sufficiency.
• Provide opportunities for hands-on practice in simulated and real-life settings to generalize skills and promote functional independence.

Social Skills and Community Integration:

• Teach and model social skills, communication strategies, and appropriate behavior in various social settings, including school, home, and community environments.
• Facilitate community-based instruction and outings to help students develop practical skills for navigating public transportation, shopping, and accessing community resources.

Vocational Preparation and Transition Planning:

• Collaborate with transition specialists, vocational educators, and community partners to develop and implement transition plans that support students' post-secondary goals and aspirations.
• Provide vocational exploration opportunities, job readiness training, and work-based experiences to help students develop employability skills and explore career options.

Individualized Support and Behavior Management:

• Provide individualized support and behavior management strategies to address students' unique needs and challenges.
• Implement positive behavior support plans, visual supports, and sensory accommodations to promote a positive and supportive classroom environment.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education, Education, or related field.
• Valid teaching license/certification for special education.
• Previous experience working with secondary-aged students with significant cognitive or developmental disabilities.
• Knowledge of adapted curriculum materials, functional academics instruction, and transition planning.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Ability to create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment and adapt instruction to meet diverse learning needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) and behavior intervention plans (BIPs).
• Training in evidence-based instructional strategies for students with diverse learning needs.
• Knowledge of differentiating instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
• Experience working in a collaborative team environment.
• Certification in special education or a related field.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary and benefits will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, following the guidelines set by the school corporation.

Working Conditions:

The Secondary Life Skills Teacher typically works in an educational setting, such as a preschool facility or early childhood center. This position may require occasional evening or weekend hours to accommodate parent meetings, events, or professional development activities. The role involves frequent interaction with young children, families, and staff members, as well as administrative duties related to program management and coordination. The capability to effectively bend, stoop and reach items at specific heights is expected in this position. The Secondary Life Skills Teacher is expected to be able to lift and carry objects of up to 50 lbs without assistance. This position may involve sitting and/or standing for extended periods and performing repetitive tasks.
