Job description

Job Title: Senior Electrical Motor Design Engineer

Job Description

This Senior Electrical Motor Design Engineer role focuses on owning the complete design and development lifecycle of motors and electromagnetic devices for aerospace, defense, and industrial applications. You will drive projects from concept through requirements definition, simulation, material selection, prototyping, testing, qualification, release, and sustaining engineering. The position suits a hands-on engineer who brings deep technical expertise in motor and electromagnetic product design, strong documentation discipline, and clear customer-facing communication skills. You will add technical depth to a growing team, supporting both new product development and ongoing product improvements in a high-reliability electromechanical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop PMDC, wound-field DC, AC induction motors, and related electromagnetic devices such as RVDTs, LVDTs, synchros, resolvers, and feedback devices.
  • Perform electromagnetic simulations, trade studies, and material selection to validate performance, efficiency, reliability, and manufacturability of motor and electromagnetic designs.
  • Develop motor electrical architectures, winding approaches, electrical interfaces, and complete design documentation from concept through formal release.
  • Support integration of motors with drives, control electronics, sensors, and interface circuitry to ensure robust system-level performance.
  • Create, update, and maintain drawing packages, 3D models, bills of materials (BOMs), calculations, specifications, and supporting technical documentation throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Provide hands-on support for prototype builds, including lab setup, test execution, troubleshooting, and iteration based on test results.
  • Plan and support validation testing, qualification testing, and environmental testing in alignment with aerospace, defense, and industrial requirements.
  • Participate in root-cause investigations and implement corrective actions to resolve technical issues and improve product reliability.
  • Interface directly with customers and cross-functional teams to clarify requirements, address technical issues, and resolve product performance concerns.
  • Partner closely with mechanical, manufacturing, quality, test, and program teams to support new product development and sustaining engineering activities.
  • Analyze test data and prototype performance using engineering tools and sound analytical methods to confirm design robustness and compliance with requirements.
  • Support FMEA activities, MTBF and reliability analysis, and design improvement initiatives to enhance performance and durability.
  • Research and evaluate new materials, technologies, and methods to improve motor performance, durability, and producibility in high-reliability applications.
  • Contribute to a high-reliability engineering culture that emphasizes rigorous design practices, thorough documentation, and continuous improvement.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5–7 years of current motor or electromagnetic product design experience.
  • Strong background in similar products, including motors, actuators, resolvers, synchros, or feedback devices.
  • Hands-on experience in designing and developing PMDC, wound-field DC, AC induction motors, and related electromagnetic devices.
  • Experience supporting programs from concept through release and sustaining support, including full product lifecycle ownership.
  • Strong understanding of electromagnetic design principles, motor topologies, and product performance tradeoffs.
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, lab troubleshooting, validation, and qualification support.
  • Strong documentation discipline with the ability to prepare, control, and release engineering deliverables such as drawings, models, BOMs, and specifications.
  • Demonstrated cross-functional collaboration skills and effective customer-facing communication abilities.
  • Ability to support both new product development and sustaining engineering work in a high-reliability environment.
  • Knowledge of electromechanical engineering concepts, including integration of motors with drives, control electronics, sensors, and interface circuitry.
  • Experience with reliability-focused activities such as FMEA and MTBF or reliability analysis.
  • Familiarity with electromagnetic simulation and analysis tools or workflows.
  • U.S. Person status required to meet export-control compliance.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Ansys Electronics Desktop, RMxprt, and/or Simcenter Magnet for electromagnetic design and simulation.
  • Familiarity with engineering and documentation tools such as Mathcad, Microsoft Office, and document/configuration management systems such as Adept or similar tools.
  • Experience with motor drives, power electronics integration, and electrical interface development.
  • Experience in electromechanical electronics, including analog and digital circuits.
  • Experience with PCB design and PCB layout in support of motor drives and related electronics.
  • Familiarity with DO-160, MIL-STD-810, or similar aerospace and defense qualification environments.
  • Experience working with high-reliability aerospace, defense, industrial, or motion-control products.
  • Experience supporting qualification activities, customer technical reviews, and production transition efforts.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and adopt new materials, technologies, and methods to improve motor performance and producibility.
  • Interest in long-term opportunities that may lead to direct employment with the organization.
