Job Description
Job Title: Director of Catechesis and Evangelization Status: Full Time
Exemption Status: Exempt
Department/Location: Diocese of Tucson Pastoral Center, Tucson, AZ
Primary Function: The Director is responsible for the overall vision, organization, and management of the office of Catechesis and Evangelization, infused with the vision of the Diocesan Bishop, who is the chief catechist of the Diocese. The position is part of the Formation and Spirituality Secretariat and collaborates directly with the Secretariat Director, receiving an annual appraisal from the Vicar General. The position operates with wide latitude for the use of independent judgment and initiative in the development and implementation of multigenerational faith formation across the Diocese. The position is ministerial in its nature, and the Director is expected to evidence in his or her work and personal life the understanding of and fidelity to all that the Church holds to be true through Sacred Scripture and Church Tradition, "...Living in a manner worthy of the call you have received." (Eph. 4:1)
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Recognize and support the unique Catholic Mission of the Diocese by speaking, acting, and instructing consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Give evidence of living Gospel values by being an active member of a Catholic Parish and remaining open to the importance of a personal faith journey, striving to model the teachings of Jesus in attitude and example.
  • Perform the job description as a lay ecclesial minister in full communion with the Universal Church and Diocese's spiritual and pastoral mission.
  • Grow in ministry by participating in diocesan liturgies, religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed.
  • Develop and implement goals for immediate, mid, and long-range effectiveness for the Office of Catechesis and Evangelization.
  • Oversee and consult on the assessment, development and implementation of parish catechetical programs for all ages and demographics present in parishes, including the needs of people with disabilities.
  • Oversee formation and certification programs for catechists, formators, and Catholic school teachers and collaborate with other ministries for ministry-specific certification tracks, ensuring both English and Spanish catechist formation.
  • Oversee and develop diocesan curriculum guide based on input from the Diocesan Bishop, the General Directory for Catechesis, the National Directory for Catechesis, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and other pertinent Church documents in conformity with the USCCB.
  • Develop, implement and monitor office budget in collaboration with the Finance Department.
  • Provide advice and guidance to the Bishop on religious education and sacramental catechesis matters.
  • Confer with diocesan, regional and national organizations concerning evangelization and catechesis programs and recommendations for improvement.
  • Monitor, review and recommend changes to policies and procedures concerning evangelization and catechesis and sacramental preparation.
  • Plan, implement and assess programs for sacramental preparation and OCIA, in collaboration with the Office of Worship and the Office of Youth and Young Adult.
  • Collaborates as appropriate with other diocesan departments to ensure effective integration of goals and programming.
  • Provides staff assistance to appropriate diocesan boards, task forces, committees, and agencies to coordinate and implement desired programs.
  • Provide advice and counsel to parishes, diocesan agencies, and other organizations on matters related to catechesis and evangelization ministry.
  • Vision, organize and support catechetical events at the diocesan and deanery level.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical/Mental Requirements: Requires coordination and manual dexterity, normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift as required in a normal office environment.
Required Activities: Walking, sitting standing, stooping, reaching, talking, handling, hearing, carrying, and keyboarding.
Basic Qualifications:
  • A working knowledge of, and a strong commitment to the mission of fostering lay leadership in the Catholic Church; must also be a practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church
  • Excellent communications skills including written, verbal, public speaking, and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of theological and liturgical terms, language and usage
  • Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills; must be a self-starter and be well-organized; must be a team player
  • Be able to travel, and be available for evening and weekend work as necessary; have reliable transportation
  • Maintain a work schedule that maximizes availability to parishes, diocesan staff and others.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, carry out multiple tasks, meet deadlines and utilize effective time management techniques
  • Proficiency in the use of computer technology including word processing, the use of excel and related technology
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Flexibility in assessing needs and strategies and adapting appropriately in a ministerial environment
  • The ability to successfully complete criminal history and background check
  • Professional bearing and clean and neat personal appearance

Education and Experience:
  • Master's degree in theology or pastoral ministry from an accredited American Catholic university or equivalent in a foreign country.
  • Three (3) years of full-time work experience or equivalent as a volunteer in a leadership role, which must have included focus on overseeing and evaluating a catechetical or evangelization program.

Other Skills and Abilities:
  • Familiarity with digital media and major social media platforms and have the ability to use them effectively in a ministry setting, to include posting consistent mission-aligned content, supporting ministry communication, outreach, and engagement.
  • Experience using video conferencing platforms such as Teams and Zoom to facilitate meetings, ministry coordination, training and faith formation.
