Job Summary
The ESL Instructor's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, delivering high quality ESL instruction to adult learners at various proficiency levels. This position supports students in developing the language skills necessary to transition into postsecondary education or workforce training programs.
The ESL Instructor reports directly to the Executive Director of Workforce. This is a part-time, non-exempt position.
Duties/Responsibilities
  • Teach ESL courses in listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and communication skills across a variety of instructional modalities, including in-person, online, hybrid, and technology-supported formats.
  • Design and implement engaging lesson plans aligned with English language development goals, workforce readiness and college transition pathways.
  • Develop and adapt instructional materials and assessments to support diverse learning styles and promote student persistence, engagement, and language acquisition.
  • Deliver assigned instructional responsibilities in ESL courses, including lesson planning and classroom or online instruction, in alignment with the established master course curriculum.
  • Conduct regular assessments of student progress and provide timely, specific, and constructive feedback to guide academic growth.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of student attendance, performance, and outcomes in compliance with program and institutional policies.
  • Promote student transition into Amarillo College programs by incorporating pathway planning and college-readiness into course content.
  • Evenings and weekends as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with ESL Teaching Certification
  • Two (2) years of teaching, tutoring, or instructional experience
  • Expertise in English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, with a strong understanding of adult learning theory and second language acquisition.
  • Proficiency in both traditional and digital instructional strategies, including the effective use of learning management systems and technology-enhanced tools.
  • Ability to teach effectively across multiple instructional formats, including in-person, online, hybrid, and technology-supported environments.
  • Strong organizational skills and effective classroom management techniques to foster a productive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to deliver culturally responsive instruction and support to students from diverse backgrounds and language experiences.
  • Familiarity with adult education digital assessment platforms and the ability to use data to guide instruction and measure student progress.
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills, with the ability to contribute effectively to a team-based academic setting.
  • Skill in differentiating instruction for learners with varying levels of English proficiency and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, composure, and adaptability in a fast-paced, high-enrollment academic environment.
