Controls Engineer

Job Overview

The Controls Engineer works closely with project engineers, project managers, and ESIโ€™s O&M teams to provide industrial control system design for the companyโ€™s ongoing biogas utilization projects. The position requires implementing sound engineering principles to ensure project designs are at the industryโ€™s cutting edge. An ability to work independently, self-motivate, and communicate effectively with team members is of the utmost importance to this position.

Reports To

The Controls Engineer reports to the Controls Engineering Lead.

Location

For mid-level applicants, this role is primarily in-office in Sisters, OR (headquarters), with some remote flexibility. For senior-level applicants, fully remote work may be available, with occasional visits to headquarters.

Responsibilities and Duties

โ€ข Review Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), electrical drawings, and operations manuals to ensure alignment with control system requirements.

โ€ข Design and develop instrumentation and control (I&C) specifications, control narratives, and cause-and-effect matrices to support safe, reliable, and efficient system operation.

โ€ข Specify measurement and analysis instrumentation and control components for automated industrial process control and plant safety.

โ€ข Perform PLC programming.

โ€ข Prepare and review UL panel drawings for fabrication.

โ€ข Participate in project HAZOP studies.

โ€ข Support the review and response to contractor RFIs.

โ€ข Support Field Service work with through remote and on-site troubleshooting and optimization.

โ€ข Plan and participate in on-site startup and commissioning activities.

โ€ข Interact with other engineering disciplines and departments throughout the company.

โ€ข Seek ways to improve and promote quality, demonstrating accuracy and thoroughness in all work.

โ€ข Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

โ€ข This is a mid to senior-level position requiring 7+ years of controls engineering experience in some of or all the following industries: Renewable Natural Gas and Biogas to Energy; Gas Processing; Chemical; Power; Waste Management; Environmental Air Quality Control Systems; Industrial Process Automation.

โ€ข Bachelorโ€™s degree in Engineering or a similar technical field from an accredited university.

โ€ข Working knowledge of ISA, NFPA, UL, safety codes, fire codes, and other industry standards.

โ€ข Proficiency in process control instrumentation and common data communication protocols including Modbus and HART.

โ€ข Proficiency in PLC programming and data communication.

โ€ข Experience tuning control loops.

โ€ข Proficiency in Studio 5000 PLC programing software.

โ€ข Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

โ€ข Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

โ€ข Ability and willingness to travel up to 25%.


Preferred Qualifications

โ€ข Proficiency with FactoryTalk (Rockwell Automation/Allenโ€‘Bradley) and Ignition (Inductive Automation) software.

โ€ข Advanced optimization, trouble shooting, and/or process design skills in a process simulation package.

โ€ข Experience in process optimization, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis (RCA) in an energy or manufacturing environment.

โ€ข E.I.T. certification or ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.

โ€ข Proficiency in UL panel design.

โ€ข Experience with process metrics and reporting key performance indicators (KPI).
