What does an ESD technician do?

An ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) Technician is responsible for implementing and maintaining electrostatic discharge control programs in manufacturing or technical environments. They ensure compliance with industry standards to prevent damage to sensitive electronic components. Their duties include testing and auditing ESD-safe work areas, training employees on ESD protocols, and maintaining ESD control materials and equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ESD technician?

To excel as an ESD Technician, you should have a solid understanding of electrostatic discharge principles, electronics troubleshooting, and safety procedures, often supported by a technical diploma or certification. Familiarity with ESD monitoring devices, test equipment, and industry standards such as ANSI/ESD S20.20 is essential. Attention to detail, effective communication, and a proactive approach to problem-solving help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are critical for ensuring electronic components are protected from static damage, minimizing costly failures and enhancing workplace safety.
