Job description

Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas (GSSWT) is headquartered in San Antonio, TX, and serves more than 10,000 Girl Scouts (girls and adults) across 21 counties in southwest Texas. Girl Scouts is the world's preeminent leadership development organization for girls, building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place

We are currently looking for individuals to fill the following Summer Camp positions at Camp METRO. Camp Metro is a day camp program held at the West Side Girl Scout Leadership Center at Coronado/Escobar in San Antonio.


Job Title: Unit Counselor

Position Purpose: Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. The counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their camper group within activities and throughout the camp to meet the intended camper outcomes.
  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
  • Assures campers are properly supervised at all times.
  • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
  • Follow daily camp schedule, run activities, and supervision of group of campers from 12 to 20, interacting with the group and providing a safe, positive environment.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the mission and outcomes.
  • Responsible for leading or assisting with the teaching of activities.
  • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.
  • Provide for a progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
  • Assist in all camp activities as directed.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
  • Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
  • Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by Nurse.
  • Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems; discuss with camp health manager and/or camp director when appropriate.
  • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to camp director.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in attitude and behavior.
  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Represent the camp when interacting with parents or community members.
  • Provide parents with appropriate feedback and information as needed for their campers to have a successful camp experience.
  • Follow safety and security protocols when campers are in public while presenting a positive image of the camp.
  • Provide supervision for campers while campers are transported to and from camp or during scheduled field trips off of camp property.
  • Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
  • Counselors will be working with campers who are Kinder through 8 grade.
  • Camp stetting is both indoors and outdoors.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age by May 26, 2026.
  • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR.
  • Valid driver's license and successful completion of a background check. 
  • Reliable transportation required.
  • Must attend 2 weeks of training - May 26-29 and June 1-5 from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. 
  • Must be available to work the entire camp sessions June 8 - July 17, 2026. 
  • Must be available to work one of the following shifts:
  • 6:45 am - 3:45 pm
  • 8:30 am - 5:30 pm
  • 9:00 am - 6:00 pm

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Willingness to work as a team member. 
  • Ability to interact with all age levels.
  • Be flexible, energetic, and have a good sense of humor. 
  • Girl Scouts experience is a plus. 
  • Experience working with children for a minimum of 1 year.

Physical Requirements:

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include heavy visual acuity.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands or arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 
  • Counselors need to be able run, jump, sit on floor, etc. when demonstrating games and songs to campers.

Location: West Side Girl Scout Leadership Center at Coronado/Escobar in San Antonio, TX 78237.

Reports To: Camp Director

  • Compensation: $14-$16.50 Hourly
  • Work schedule is 40 hours per week - Monday through Friday. 
  • If selected for hire, a minimum of 2 references will be requested.
