Equity Trading Assistant information

What is an equity trading assistant?

An Equity Trading Assistant is a professional who supports equity traders in executing and managing stock trades on behalf of clients or the trading desk. They are responsible for tasks such as monitoring market activity, processing trade orders, maintaining trade records, and ensuring compliance with regulations. Equity Trading Assistants also coordinate with other departments, handle trade settlements, and may assist with client communications. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an equity trading assistant and how do they support the trading desk?

An Equity Trading Assistant typically starts the day by preparing trading reports, monitoring market news, and checking system readiness. Throughout the day, they support traders by managing order flow, ensuring trades are accurately booked, and resolving any trade discrepancies. They also communicate with compliance, operations, and technology teams to address issues and ensure smooth trade settlements. This role requires strong attention to detail, multitasking, and effective communication skills, as assistants serve as a crucial link between traders and back-office functions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an equity trading assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Equity Trading Assistant, you need a strong background in finance or economics, analytical skills, and attention to detail, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with trading platforms like Bloomberg Terminal, order management systems, and proficiency in Excel are typically required, and FINRA Series 7 or 63 certifications can be advantageous. Excellent communication, multitasking, and problem-solving abilities set standout candidates apart in this fast-paced environment. These skills and qualifications ensure efficient trade execution, risk management, and seamless support for traders in dynamic financial markets.

Job Overview
The Trading team is seeking to hire a Junior Equities Trader who is analytical, intellectually curious, and a creative problem-solver with excellent verbal and written communication skills. The ideal candidate thrives in a collaborative environment that values individual initiative, innovation, and smart risk-taking. This role requires a strong understanding of and experience in Equities trading and a solid grasp of market structure, liquidity dynamics, and best execution practices across U.S. equity markets. The trader will be responsible not only for executing trade orders initiated by the Portfolio Manager but also for contributing insights on trading flow dynamics and generating analytics on trading technicals. There will be daily interactions with sell-side sales, trading, and internal Portfolio Managers, risk and quant teams, so established street relationships and teamwork are essential.

Major Responsibilities

Execute trades across U.S. equity markets in line with Portfolio Manager direction, internal guidelines, and best execution standards.
Monitor market conditions, liquidity, and pricing to support efficient and timely trade execution.
Collaborate with Portfolio Managers, Analysts, Risk, Operations, Compliance, and Technology to support the full trade lifecycle.
Identify opportunities to enhance trading workflows, controls, and overall operational efficiency.
Assist in developing and refining trading procedures, reporting, and execution processes.
Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and counterparties, contributing to ongoing evaluation and partnership management.

What We Value

4+ years of experience in equities trading, either on the buy-side or sell-side, with strong knowledge of U.S. equity markets and market structure.
Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with brokers and counterparties; existing network is a plus.
Experience working in a fast-paced trading environment, supporting multiple Portfolio Managers with a high degree of accuracy and responsiveness.
Strong understanding of trade execution, liquidity dynamics, and best execution practices.
Highly detail-oriented with strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively across teams including Risk, Operations, Compliance, and Technology.

We anticipate the base salary of this role to be between $125,000-$140,000.  In addition to a base salary, the successful candidate will also be eligible to receive a discretionary year-end bonus.

In all respects, candidates need to reflect the following SFM core values:

Smart risk-taking   //   Owner's Mindset   //   Teamwork   //   Humility   //   Integrity
