What is an equity research supervisory analyst?

Equity Research Supervisory Analysts are professionals who review and approve equity research reports before they are published to ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and firm-specific standards. They act as a control function within investment banks or research firms, verifying that analysis and recommendations are accurate, objective, and do not contain material non-public information. Their work helps maintain the integrity of research distributed to clients, investors, and the public. Supervisory Analysts are typically required to hold specific licenses, such as the FINRA Series 16, and possess strong knowledge of financial markets, regulations, and reporting standards.

How does an equity research supervisory analyst typically collaborate with research analysts and compliance teams?

Equity Research Supervisory Analysts work closely with research analysts to review and approve research reports before publication, ensuring accuracy, objectivity, and compliance with regulatory standards. They frequently interact with compliance teams to stay updated on evolving policies and to address any potential conflicts of interest or disclosure requirements. This collaborative environment requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to balance regulatory obligations with the support of timely research dissemination.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an equity research supervisory analyst, and why are they important?
