Epidemiology Internships information

What is an epidemiology internship?

An epidemiology internship is a temporary position that provides hands-on experience in public health research, data analysis, and disease prevention. Interns often work with professionals in government agencies, healthcare organizations, or academic institutions to collect and analyze health data. Their responsibilities may include conducting literature reviews, assisting in study design, and supporting public health initiatives. These internships help students and recent graduates gain practical skills and exposure to real-world epidemiological work.

What kinds of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an epidemiology internship?

During an epidemiology internship, you can expect to assist with data collection and analysis related to disease outbreaks, health trends, or risk factors. Common tasks include cleaning datasets, conducting literature reviews, helping to prepare reports or presentations, and supporting field investigations or survey deployment. Interns often work closely with experienced epidemiologists and public health professionals, gaining exposure to real-life public health challenges. This hands-on experience enables you to apply academic knowledge in practical ways, develop professional skills, and build a strong foundation for a future career in epidemiology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an epidemiology internship?

To thrive as an Epidemiology Intern, you need a strong background in public health, statistics, and research methods, often supported by coursework in epidemiology or a related field. Familiarity with statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, R, or Stata, as well as literature review databases, is commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and collaborative communication are standout soft skills in this position. These qualifications are essential for accurately collecting and analyzing data, contributing to public health research, and supporting effective team outcomes.
