Ambulatory Pharmacy Technician

The Ambulatory Pharmacy Technician provides integrated support to patients and pharmacists by providing a 'hands-on" approach to total quality patient care through the delivery of a full continuum of medication adherence support.

Duties & Responsibilities

Customer Service & Patient Support

  • Provides excellent customer service to patients, caregivers, and healthcare team members.
  • Communicates directly with patients by phone, in-person, or via secure electronic pathways to support medication awareness, answer questions, and address concerns.
  • Answers, resolves, and triages inbound inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Conducts outbound therapy and medication adherence check-ins.
  • Assists patients with refill authorizations, prescription access, and securing medication refills.
  • Assists providers and patients with medication and medical device prior authorization requests.
  • Documents patient encounters per policy in the electronic health record and/or the pharmacy dispensing software systems.
  • Resolves insurance-related issues and supports patients with financial assistance programs.

Prescription Processing & Medication Management

  • Interprets and enters prescription orders accurately.
  • Clarifies prescription details with pharmacists and clinicians when needed.
  • Labels and fills prescriptions for pharmacist verification.
  • Identifies medications requiring special storage or handling, including hazardous and refrigerated medications.
  • Identifies and assembles necessary supplies (e.g., sharps containers, syringes, alcohol swabs, bandages) for select medications.
  • Prepares medication for delivery to patients, clinical departments, and residential settings.
  • Provides medication delivery services within hospitals and patient homes.

Operations, Data Management & Process Improvement

  • Achieves operational objectives by entering data, adjudicating test claims, and preparing follow-up action plans.
  • Manages, organizes, and updates data using various database applications.
  • Maintains pharmacy inventory, including drug ordering, receiving, and stock management.
  • Applies observations and recommendations to enhance productivity, operational quality, and customer service standards.
  • Identifies trends, resolves operational challenges, recommends improvements, and implements changes.
  • Actively participates in process improvement initiatives and departmental projects.
  • Acts as a value-added business partner to stakeholders across the organization.

Professionalism & Compliance

  • Protects organizational value by maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Maintains high levels of quality and compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.

Requirements
  • High School or GED Required
  • Minimum 1 to 3 Years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician, 5 years preferred
  • Registered in the state of Rhode Island as a Pharmacy Technician
  • National certification as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
Technical & Clinical Knowledge
  • Strong understanding of pharmacy reimbursement across state, federal, and commercial payers.
  • High proficiency with healthcare information systems; experience with EPIC Willow and EPIC inpatient/outpatient is a plus.
  • Solid knowledge of computerized information systems and pharmacy-related digital workflows.
  • Ability to maintain accurate record-keeping systems and follow established documentation procedures.
