What is an Epic nurse?

An Epic Nurse is a registered nurse who specializes in working with the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system. These nurses are trained to use, configure, and sometimes help implement the Epic software in healthcare settings. They often act as liaisons between clinical staff and IT teams, helping ensure that the EHR supports clinical workflows efficiently. Epic Nurses may also provide training and support to other staff members on how to use the Epic system effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Epic nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Epic Nurse, you need a solid background in nursing practice, clinical workflows, and an understanding of healthcare informatics, typically backed by an RN license and clinical experience. Proficiency with the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system—including Epic certification or training—is vital for configuring, troubleshooting, and optimizing the software. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and collaborative skills help bridge the gap between clinical staff and IT professionals. These abilities ensure effective EHR adoption, improved patient care, and streamlined healthcare operations.

How does an Epic nursing role typically collaborate with IT teams during electronic health record (EHR) system updates or troubleshooting?

Epic Nursing professionals often act as a bridge between clinical staff and IT teams when implementing or updating electronic health record (EHR) systems. They translate clinical workflows into technical requirements, provide feedback on system usability, and help test new features before rollout. During troubleshooting, they communicate end-user issues to IT, assist with training, and ensure that clinical needs are addressed in technical solutions. This close collaboration helps minimize disruptions to patient care and ensures the EHR supports nursing practice effectively.
