Job description

Position Overview

Now Hiring: Direct Support Professional - St. Joseph's House

Location: Hyannis, MA - 02601

Salary: $20.50/Hourly

Work Schedule: Thursday - Saturday: 3PM to 11PM & Sunday 7AM to 3PM (This is a 32-hour position)

Our emergency shelter program serves men and women facing homelessness, providing not just a place to stay - but a supportive community that helps guests take the next steps toward stable housing and lasting independence.

We're seeking a Direct Support Professional who's ready to make a difference every day. This role is perfect for someone who leads with compassion, thrives in a dynamic environment, and is dedicated to helping others rebuild their lives. They will be responsible for ensuring the functions of the program are met while providing services that are safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and client-centered.

What You'll Do:

  • Ability to work as part of a team with a commitment to end homelessness
  • Must demonstrate honesty, integrity, and professionalism at all times
  • Must exemplify our mission in action: which is helping those in need and treating others with compassion, dignity and respect
  • Create and maintain a positive environment for clients, staff and service providers 
  • Listen to clients and offer support, encouragement and empathy within the context of healthy boundaries 
  • Thoroughly orient new guests to the general shelter environment 
  • Maintain clear, detailed records during shift 
  • Check and enforce that all clients maintain a clean and safe living space
  • Launder bedding, linens, and any other necessary items
  • Support clients and assume responsibility for enforcing the rules and policies of the shelter
  • Identify and follow through with resolutions of problems that arise within the shelter
  • De-escalate conflicts, identify safety concerns, accurately report all incidents
  • Responsible for documenting log notes with any and all important information that occurs during the shift
  • Responsible for checking in anyone entering shelter (Clients, Guests, Visitors etc.)
  • Conduct hourly rounds, to ensure the safety of the clients and the shelter
  • Complete work orders for Maintenance as necessary
  • Complete exit walk through, turn around report and unit set up
  • Clean office and empty trash
  • Ensure cleanliness of all hallways and parking lot
  • Maintain and track shelter supplies, shelter keys and inventory of the food pantry
  • Assist with meal preparation and cooking
  • Attends all scheduled staff meetings
  • Must adhere to all EOHLC program requirements
  • Responsible for filing client information as necessary
  • Respond to inquiries, phone calls and correspondence in a timely manner
  • Complete all tasks assigned by the House Manager/Supervisor
  • Work with the Manager/Supervisor on any additional projects/matters for which he/she requests related to EOHLC or the program
  • Attend all required program trainings and assigned in-service trainings to comply with annual training requirements
  • Comply with all safety regulations, CCFR policies and adhere to agency confidentiality policy
  • Report all safety concerns to Manager/Supervisor
  • Mandated reporting of abuse and neglect
  • Responsible for reporting all incidents (critical, serious or non-compliance) to the Manager/Supervisor

This is a hands-on role, primarily scheduled Thursday - Saturday: 3PM to 11PM & Sunday 7AM to 3PM

What You Bring:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Human Services (preferred) or equivalent experience
  • Experience: 1-2 years of shelter experience
  • Homelessness services, mental health, trauma, or substance use support
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and assessment skills
  • Strong leadership abilities with a heart for service
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Reliable, insured vehicle and valid driver's license
  • Bilingual skills are a plus!

  • Travels by automobile and is exposed to varying weather conditions
  • Sits, stands, bends, lifts, grasps, kneels, crouches, reaches, climbs, and moves intermittently during the business hours
  • Works in office areas as well as throughout the HOUSE family shelter as needed
  • May be exposed to emotionally upset clients, family members, staff and visitors
  • May be exposed to frequent interruptions, loud noise, extreme heat/cold
  • Spends time greeting clients/family members, courteously answering door and telephone calls
  • Ability to make sensory perceptions to evaluate environmental conditions
  • Ability to work and promote a flexible schedule based on programmatic coverage, weekends, holidays, and program emergencies
