Summary:


Under the supervision of the Youth Services Supervisor, the Summer Junior Counselor is responsible for supporting the implementation of the Ibero Uplift Summer Program, a youth development initiative designed to provide safe, enriching, and engaging out-of-school time experiences. 

This position is designed for teens interested in gaining work experience in youth development, leadership, and community engagement. The program emphasizes social-emotional learning, literacy enrichment, mentorship, service learning, and experiential education. 

The Junior Counselor assists in maintaining a structured, supportive environment where participants feel safe, respected, and empowered. Responsibilities include supporting supervision, assisting with program activities, and actively engaging with youth participants. 


This is a temporary summer position and will conclude on or before August 8th at the end of the program.


Essential Functions:

  • Reports to the Youth Services Supervisor or other program staff. 
  • Always provide active supervision of youth participants, ensuring safety and adherence to program expectations  
  • Maintain appropriate staff-to-youth ratios and ensure accountability during both on-site and off-site activities  
  • Support structured program components such as Turning Pages Together, Prevention education, or Nature and Youth. 
  • Encourage youth participation, engagement, and leadership during all activities.  
  • Build and maintain positive supportive relationships with youth, and provide informal mentorship, guidance, and encouragement.  
  • Implement behavior management strategies aligned with positive youth development practices 
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with staff, youth, and parents. 
  • Assures compliance with agency's rules and regulations and performance standards. 
  • Provide peer and social skills development strategies, behaviorally based incentives, achievement recognition and rule compliance structure- which leads to enhanced academic and behavioral outcomes for the youth.?  
  • Attend formal and informal meetings and training sessions in the agency. 
  • Planning, preparing and delivering lessons during enrichment time. 
  • Communication, consulting and co-operating with other members of the staff to ensure the best interest of the youth. 
  • Ensuring the safe custody and optimum use of equipment used during lessons.  
  • Maintain accurate attendance and incident documentation as required.  
  • Communicate with program staff in regard to participant needs and concerns.  
  • Any other duties may be assigned by the Youth Services Supervisor or program staff.   


Authority:

The employee exercises considerable initiative and makes decisions regarding assignments of tasks and monitoring activities. Must use sound judgment in reaching those decisions and in the day-to-day tasks with the students. The individual must be resourceful and able to display initiative and understanding of the agency's policies and procedures.

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Must be 14 years old or older. 
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, preferred. 
  • Prior experience in working with youth in a structured program setting.  
  • Experience working with youth 10-18 years old. 
  • Experience or interest in social-emotional learning, youth mentoring, or group facilitation. 
  • Ability to speak positively and respectfully to the youth and their families. 
  • Ability to follow guidance from supervisors and adhere to program expectations 
  • Ability to participate in recreational, indoor, and outdoor activities with the youth. 
  • Ability to stand, walk, and remain active for extended periods of time. 
  • Good physical and mental health. 

A combination of training and experience other than the specified, if judged to be adequate for the job, may be accepted by the President and CEO


Physical Demands:

The position does require occasional standing, squatting, lifting up to approximately 40 lbs. And frequent sitting.
