Job description

Role accountabilities
As a Scientist 1, you will play a key role as part of a collaborative team, contributing to the planning, management, and execution of various project scopes. Your daily/weekly activities will be focused on field-based work, with travel to work sites throughout Alaska expected and potential out of state travel in the winter months. Office based tasks will also be conducted including field work planning and report writing.
Your typical responsibilities will include:
  • Field Work: Groundwater and soil sample collection, Installation of groundwater monitoring wells and soil borings, well abandonment, remedial system operations and maintenance, and other field-based tasks.
  • Health and Safety Stewardship: Ensuring adherence to safety protocols and procedures.
  • Project Team Interaction: Communicating effectively with clients, stakeholders or regulators while on job sites, and effective communications with the project team.
  • Data Collection and Evaluation: Following standard operating procedures to conduct, collect, and record environmental data from sites in support of conceptual site model development, delineation of the nature and extent of contamination, and contributing to the design, modification, or optimization of site remedies.
  • Technical Documentation: Assisting the project team to write technical reports.
  • Coordination: Help organizing and planning field events, equipment rentals, and scheduling subcontractors.

This role offers a diverse mix of responsibilities, providing opportunities to contribute meaningfully to a variety of environmental projects.
Qualifications & Experience
Successful candidates for this position will be detail oriented with excellent communication and organization skills. Candidates will be able to work effectively as part of a larger team and while working independently. Key aspects of the Scientist 1 position include overseeing or conducting scopes of work, managing personal work schedule, and ensuring strict adherence to health and safety requirements. Preferred qualifications may include experience working around heavy equipment, environmental water, soil, and air sampling, troubleshooting system or equipment issues, and knowledge of local and federal environmental regulations. Candidates must also maintain a strong focus on health and safety, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Minimum qualifications:
  • 0-2 years of experience in the environmental industry
  • Bachelor's Degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a closely related field.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Previous experience with environmental sampling, technical report writing and data evaluation
  • Familiarity with federal and/or state environmental regulations
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (with 8-hour annual refresher, if applicable)

We offer nine paid holidays and 15 days PTO that accrue per year. The salary range for this position is $55,200 - $82,800 / per year. Actual salaries will vary and are based on several factors, such as experience, education, budget, internal equity, project and location.
