The Department of Environmental Quality is looking for an Environmental Scientist for the Division of Air Quality. This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on the job level offered within the series.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducting inspections/audits and determining compliance with environmental regulations.
- Technical reading/writing skills for understanding and evaluating state and federal air quality regulations.
- Communication both verbally and in writing with internal and external customers.
- Working both independently and in a team environment.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least three years of experience working with federal and state air quality rules, performing compliance inspections, stack testing, and continuous emissions monitoring. Candidates with less than three years of experience may be considered at an Environmental Scientist I or II level.
- Experience will include technical report writing and written/verbal interactions with industry, government agencies, and the public.
- Communication skills, both verbal and in writing, are critical to this position.
- Familiar with environmental rulemaking and permit writing.
- Ability to travel in remote areas of the state and work independently with some overnight stays.
- Most possess a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science or higher degree in one of the following: environmental sciences, environmental health sciences, biological sciences, or physical sciences.
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Reference Method9 (Visible Emission Observation) Certification.
Job Series
The selected candidate for this position may be brought in as an Environmental Scientist I with a salary range of $25.90- $38.90, an Environmental Scientist II with a salary range of $30.47 - $45.78 per hour, or an Environmental Scientist III with a salary range of $35.85 - $53.87 per hour.

- Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
- Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
