What does an environmental process engineer do?

An Environmental Process Engineer designs, develops, and optimizes processes that minimize the environmental impact of industrial operations. They work to reduce waste, improve resource efficiency, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. Their responsibilities may include developing pollution control systems, implementing sustainable manufacturing practices, and conducting environmental impact assessments. Environmental Process Engineers often collaborate with other engineers, scientists, and regulatory agencies to create solutions that protect the environment while maintaining operational efficiency.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an environmental process engineer?

To thrive as an Environmental Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, environmental, or mechanical engineering, often supported by a relevant bachelor’s degree and sometimes a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with modeling software (e.g., AutoCAD, MATLAB), environmental regulations, and process simulation tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you work effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These abilities ensure accurate design, compliance with regulations, and successful implementation of sustainable environmental solutions.

How does an environmental process engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams on sustainability projects?

Environmental Process Engineers frequently work alongside professionals from diverse disciplines, such as project managers, chemists, regulatory specialists, and operations staff. They play a key role in evaluating current processes and proposing improvements to minimize environmental impact, often facilitating meetings to ensure all team members are aligned on project goals and compliance requirements. Effective communication and project management skills are essential, as the engineer must translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders and coordinate tasks across departments. This collaborative approach helps deliver sustainable solutions that meet both operational and regulatory standards.

What is the difference between Environmental Process Engineer vs Environmental Compliance Specialist?

AspectEnvironmental Process EngineerEnvironmental Compliance Specialist
CredentialsBachelor's in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field; often requires engineering licensureBachelor's in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related; certifications like CESA or CPE may be preferred
Work EnvironmentDesigning and optimizing environmental processes in manufacturing, industrial, or plant settingsEnsuring company compliance with environmental laws and regulations, often in office or regulatory settings
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, chemical, and industrial sectors to improve processesUsed across industries to meet legal standards and reduce environmental impact

While both roles focus on environmental concerns, the Environmental Process Engineer primarily designs and improves processes to reduce environmental impact, whereas the Environmental Compliance Specialist ensures adherence to environmental laws and regulations. Both roles often collaborate but serve different functions within environmental management.

    • Prepare performance specifications and RFQs, and coordinate with vendors throughout the equipment selection process.
    • Identify process improvements and support continuous improvement initiatives across client operations.
    • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure alignment across engineering, project management, installation, and start-up activities.
    • Provide field supervision or support during equipment installation, commissioning, and site visits.
    • Maintain strong communication with clients, contractors, and project stakeholders to ensure technical accuracy and exceptional service.

Why Join Sharpe?
At Sharpe, you’ll join a people-centric organization built on collaboration, integrity, and responsibility. For more than 30 years, we’ve helped food & beverage manufacturers improve how products are processed, produced, and delivered. We bring that same innovation and care to our team by fostering an environment where people can grow, contribute, and thrive.

Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Process, Chemical, or related).
    • 8–10+ years of relevant process engineering experience; supervisory experience preferred.
    • Strong understanding of 3A, USDA, and FDA sanitary design requirements.
    • Proficiency with AutoCAD (including isometric drawings), Microsoft Office, and process engineering tools.
    • Experience executing process design from concept through installation and commissioning.
    • Ability to travel to client sites (30–50%) for meetings, design reviews, installation support, and start-ups.
    • A detail-oriented, collaborative engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, client-focused environment.
