What can I do with an environmental law degree?

An environmental law degree prepares individuals for careers as environmental lawyers, policy analysts, or compliance officers, focusing on laws and regulations that protect the environment. Graduates often work for government agencies, law firms, or environmental organizations, utilizing skills in legal research, advocacy, and regulatory analysis.

What types of environmental lawyers are there?

Environmental lawyers specialize in areas such as regulatory compliance, pollution control, conservation, and land use. They may work for government agencies, private firms, or non-profit organizations, often requiring knowledge of environmental laws like the Clean Air Act or Clean Water Act. Different roles may focus on litigation, policy development, or advising clients on environmental issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Environmental Lawyer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Lawyer, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, and specialized knowledge of environmental regulations and statutes. Familiarity with legal research databases, environmental impact assessment tools, and compliance management systems is typically required. Exceptional analytical thinking, negotiation skills, and persuasive communication help you advocate effectively and navigate complex legal scenarios. These skills and qualities ensure successful client representation, regulatory compliance, and the advancement of sustainable environmental policies.

What is environmental law?

Environmental law is a branch of law focused on the protection of the environment through regulations, statutes, and treaties. It governs how individuals, businesses, and governments interact with the natural world by setting standards for air and water quality, waste management, wildlife protection, and land use. Environmental lawyers often work on cases involving pollution, conservation, climate change, and the enforcement of environmental regulations. They may represent government agencies, organizations, or private clients. The field is continually evolving to address new environmental challenges and emerging technologies.

What is the difference between Environmental Law vs Environmental Policy?

Work EnvironmentLegal settings, government agencies, law firmsGovernment agencies, NGOs, think tanks
Employer & Industry UsageLegal compliance, litigation, advisingDeveloping policies, advocacy, planning

Environmental Law involves interpreting and applying legal statutes to protect the environment, often requiring a law degree. Environmental Policy focuses on creating and implementing guidelines to influence environmental practices, typically requiring expertise in policy or environmental studies. While both roles aim to promote environmental sustainability, Environmental Law is more legal and regulatory, whereas Environmental Policy emphasizes strategic planning and advocacy.

Is it hard to get a job as an environmental lawyer?

Securing a job as an environmental lawyer can be competitive due to specialized knowledge requirements and the need for a law degree and bar admission. Success often depends on relevant experience, internships, and understanding of environmental regulations and policies.

What are some common challenges faced by environmental law professionals when working on regulatory compliance cases?

Environmental law professionals often encounter complex and evolving regulations at local, state, and federal levels. Navigating these overlapping requirements while ensuring clients remain compliant can be challenging, especially as laws change in response to new scientific findings or policy priorities. Additionally, environmental lawyers must often collaborate with scientists, government agencies, and industry experts to gather evidence and build strong cases. Staying up to date with current legislation and maintaining strong communication skills are essential for success in this dynamic field.

Do environmental lawyers make money?

Environmental lawyers typically earn salaries that vary based on experience, location, and employer type, with median annual wages often exceeding $80,000. Experienced attorneys working in large firms or specialized environmental law practices can earn significantly higher, sometimes over $150,000 annually. Salary growth is also influenced by additional skills, certifications, and the complexity of cases handled.

Job description

POSITION: Staff Attorney/Program Advisor, Environment Program
DEPARTMENT: The Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice/City Bar Fund
POSITION REPORTS TO: Associate Executive Director
LOCATION: New York City (Hybrid)
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
Established in 2003, the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice advances global justice by engaging lawyers across borders to support civil society and an ethically active legal profession. The Vance Center is a unique collaboration of international lawyers catalyzing public interest innovation. A non-profit program of the New York City Bar Association, we bring together leading law firms and other partners worldwide to pioneer international justice initiatives and provide pro bono legal representation to social justice NGOs.
The Vance Center fulfills our mission by 1) providing pro bono legal support to civil society organizations working on issues related to the environment, human rights and access to justice, institutional integrity, and public interest reporting, and 2) building the capacity of the legal profession in pro bono practice, ethics, and diversity.
Over two decades, the Vance Center has worked across the globe to encourage and support lawyers to participate in public interest matters. It engages them in providing pro bono legal services to civil society organizations and in joining initiatives to advance fundamental rights and the rule of law. The Vance Center acts as a practitioner and convener, bringing together legal professionals from the United States, Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Europe to collaborate in these efforts. It has developed active networks with lawyers, law firms, bar associations, and other legal organizations, as well as NGOs, to expand the legal community's pro bono engagement.
The Vance Center recruits private law firms across the world, including members of the Vance Center Committee, to co-counsel with our program staff who engage in substantive legal work, including legal research and analysis, advocacy, and litigation.

Our support offers them a stronger foundation to continue defending and advocating for critical environmental rights.
