What does an environmental laboratory manager do?

An Environmental Laboratory Manager oversees the daily operations of a laboratory that tests environmental samples such as water, soil, and air for pollutants and contaminants. They ensure all laboratory processes comply with regulatory standards, manage laboratory staff, and maintain quality control procedures. Environmental Laboratory Managers are also responsible for budgeting, equipment maintenance, and reporting accurate results to clients or regulatory agencies. Their role is critical in ensuring the safety of the environment and public health through reliable laboratory analysis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an environmental laboratory manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Laboratory Manager, you need a solid background in chemistry or environmental science, laboratory management experience, and a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), quality control protocols, and certifications like NELAC or ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation are typically required.
