Position Description

- Position Summary
Classified as: Environmental Health and Safety Professional IFull-time temporary position available on or after October 12, 2026 for Safety and Risk Management. Appointment will be made for one year from date of hire with the possibility of reappointment and/or becoming permanent based on budget, department needs, and job performance.
This position's responsibilities are carried out under direct supervision. The incumbent is responsible for performing entry-level professional duties in support of environmental health and safety (EHS) programs within the Department of Safety & Risk Management. Responsibilities include supporting the implementation and maintenance of environmental health and safety programs, conducting routine inspections, assisting with hazard and risk assessments, supporting incident investigations, maintaining compliance records, collecting and compiling environmental health and safety data, assisting with safety training and outreach activities, and applying established federal, state, CSU, and university environmental health and safety regulations, policies, and procedures. The incumbent collaborates with campus departments and assists senior environmental health and safety professionals in promoting regulatory compliance and a safe and healthy learning and work environment. Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment and compliance with established policies and procedures.
- Job Duties
- Duties include but are not limited to:
- Supports the implementation and maintenance of environmental health and safety (EHS) programs, systems, procedures, and training activities in assigned program areas.
- Assists senior environmental health and safety professionals with implementing program activities and maintaining compliance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Assists with developing and updating environmental health and safety training materials and educational resources.
- Assists with conducting routine safety orientations and program-specific training using established materials and guidance.
- Participates in environmental health and safety outreach and engagement activities that promote a culture of safety and well-being within the university community.
- Collaborates with campus departments and CSU stakeholders to support environmental health and safety initiatives and regulatory compliance.
- Assists with routine activities supporting assigned environmental health and safety program areas.
- Applies applicable federal, state, CSU, and university environmental health and safety laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards during assigned work.
- Maintains environmental health and safety records, databases, permits, inspection logs, and compliance documentation.
- Collects and compiles environmental health and safety data, program metrics, and compliance information to prepare routine reports.
- Assists with monitoring environmental health and safety activities and reports issues or concerns to senior environmental health and safety professionals.
- Documents environmental health and safety inspection, investigation, and compliance activities using established procedures.
- Assists with preparing routine environmental health and safety reports as requested.
- Assists with conducting routine inspections of university facilities, laboratories, shops, equipment, and work areas using established environmental health and safety procedures.
- Assists with hazard and risk assessments to identify potential environmental health and safety concerns.
- Documents inspection findings and monitors the status of assigned corrective actions for follow-up.
- Supports investigations of incidents, injuries, complaints, and near-misses by gathering information, documenting findings, and preparing reports for review.
- Applies applicable federal, state, CSU, and university environmental health and safety regulations, policies, procedures, and standards during assigned work.
- Responds to routine environmental health and safety service requests and provides guidance using established policies and procedures.
- Performs routine hazardous waste coordination activities and conducts inspections of hazardous waste accumulation areas in accordance with established procedures.
- Calibrates, maintains, and inventories environmental health and safety monitoring equipment following standard operating procedures.
- Assists with emergency response activities and performs assigned responsibilities during Emergency Operations Center (EOC) activations.
- May be required to obtain additional training and/or certification as part of professional development, based on department and/or campus needs, to stay current with industry standards.
- At the direction of appropriate administrator, may provide support to other areas as needed.
- The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this classification.

- Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field.
Experience: Relevant education and/or experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
- Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of experience working in a higher education, government, or similarly regulated environment supporting environmental health and safety programs.
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Public Health, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Prior experience in the California State University (CSU) system or a higher education environment.
- Experience supporting environmental health and safety inspections, incident investigations, or regulatory compliance activities.
- Experience maintaining environmental health and safety records, databases, and compliance documentation.
- Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Forms, database systems, and environmental health and safety software applications, such as Risk & Safety Solutions.
- Experience assisting with or delivering environmental health and safety training, safety orientations, or presentations.
- Completion of Incident Command System (ICS), Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS), and National Incident Management System (NIMS) training to support emergency preparedness and Emergency Operations Center (EOC) functions.
- Certification in an environmental health or safety discipline, such as Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Safety & Health Official (CSHO), or a related professional certification.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- General knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations, standards, and best practices.
- Analytical skills to collect, analyze, and summarize data and metrics.
- Organizational skills, with the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work.

- Salary Range
- Anticipated salary will be $5,178 (step 1) per month plus excellent paid benefits. Future increases, including step advancement, are subject to contract negotiations. Full $5,178 (step 1) - $7,543 (step 20) per month.
