What Do Environmental Engineers Do?

Environmental engineers research and develop systems and solutions to environmental problems. They have backgrounds in soil science, chemistry, biology, and engineering, which they apply to the production of architectural systems that address air pollution, water conservation, recycling, sustainability, and public health.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Environmental Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Engineer, you need a solid background in environmental science, engineering principles, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in environmental, civil, or chemical engineering. Familiarity with modeling software (such as AutoCAD and GIS), environmental impact assessment tools, and professional certifications like the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Professional Engineer (PE) license is valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication set outstanding candidates apart in this field. These skills ensure engineers can design solutions that protect public health and the environment while meeting regulatory and project requirements.

What are some common challenges Environmental Engineers face when working on large-scale remediation projects?

Environmental Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple stakeholders, navigating complex regulatory requirements, and managing unexpected site conditions during large-scale remediation projects. Effective communication with project managers, government agencies, and local communities is essential to ensure compliance and address concerns promptly. Additionally, adapting technical solutions to evolving site data and balancing project timelines with environmental protection goals are frequent aspects of the role.

What are environmental engineers?

Environmental engineers are professionals who use principles of engineering, soil science, biology, and chemistry to develop solutions to environmental problems. They work to improve recycling, waste disposal, public health, and control of water and air pollution. Environmental engineers often design systems for water and air purification, manage hazardous waste, and ensure organizations comply with environmental regulations. Their work helps protect the environment and human health by minimizing the impact of human activities.

What is the difference between Environmental Engineer vs Environmental Scientist?

Employer & Industry UsageConsulting firms, government agencies, manufacturing industriesResearch institutions, government agencies, environmental consulting

Environmental Engineers focus on designing and implementing solutions to environmental problems, often working on projects that require engineering design and compliance. Environmental Scientists primarily conduct research, analyze data, and assess environmental conditions. While both roles require a background in environmental studies, Engineers typically need engineering credentials and licensing, whereas Scientists focus on research and data analysis. Both roles are vital in environmental protection but serve different functions within the industry.

Description

Why Farallon?ย

As a 100% employee-owned firm, Farallon is built on a shared purpose and long-term commitment. Our people are the reason clients trust us with their most complex environmental challenges-from high-stakes remediation projects to regulatory negotiations that shape communities. When you join Farallon, you join a team of scientists and engineers who take pride in delivering technically sound, defensible, and practical solutions.ย

You'll work alongside industry leaders who are shaping the future of environmental consulting across the West Coast. Your expertise will directly influence project outcomes, client relationships, and the continued growth of our employee-owned firm.ย

The Role: Engineering Solutions That Lastย

As a Senior Environmental/Remediation Engineer, you will be a strategic leader and technical expert guiding complex environmental projects from investigation through cleanup and closure. You'll collaborate across disciplines, mentor emerging engineers, and serve as a trusted advisor to clients navigating regulatory, technical, and business challenges.ย

This is a role for someone who thrives on solving difficult problems, building strong client relationships, and elevating the quality of engineering practice across a team. This full-time, exempt, hybrid role may be based in either our Seattle or Bellevue, Washington locations.

Lead & Innovateย

  • Originate and grow client relationships while identifying new opportunities for Farallon's core practice areas.ย
  • Develop cleanup strategies grounded in strong conceptual site models and regulatory insight.ย
  • Oversee feasibility studies, remedial design, pilot testing, and engineering documentation.ย

Drive Projects Forwardย

  • Lead multidisciplinary teams through site assessment, investigation, remedy selection, construction, and closure.ย
  • Manage project scope, budget, schedule, and quality across multiple complex projects.ย
  • Ensure technical excellence in deliverables including RI/FS reports, CAPs, EDRs, and CARs.ย

Elevate the Teamย

  • Mentor and coach staff engineers and scientists.ย
  • Support business development initiatives across the firm.ย
  • Foster a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.ย

Other Dutiesย

This job description is not designed to cover every activity, duty, or responsibility required of the role. Responsibilities may evolve at any time with or without notice.ย

Requirements

What You'll Bringย

  • Technical Expertiseย
  • ABET-accredited BS or MS in civil or environmental engineering.ย
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Washington.ย
  • 12+ years of environmental consulting experience, including investigation, remediation system design, and implementation.ย
  • Strong engineering design capabilities across multiple contaminants and remedial technologies (e.g., air sparge, SVE, MPE, in-situ treatment, excavation, engineering controls).ย
  • Experience developing remedial cost estimates and evaluating cleanup alternatives.ย
  • Working knowledge of MTCA, RCRA, CERCLA, and related guidance.ย
  • Permitting experience (PSCAA, CSGP, NPDES, local jurisdictions).ย
  • Experience communicating with Local, State, and Federal regulators.ย
  • Proven ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and complex projects.ย
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of proposals and technical reports.ย
  • Ability to collaborate with internal teams on business development strategies.ย

Bonus Skillsย

  • Experience developing new clients or practice areas.ย
  • Familiarity with GIS, data management, and analytical methods. Experience with VCP cleanups, PFAS, air compliance, sediment remediation, or stormwater permitting.ย

Owner-Level Benefitsย

We believe taking care of our people is the best way to take care of our clients and Farallon is proud to offer comprehensive benefits to meet the diverse needs of our employees.ย

  • Ownership: Participation in our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).ย
  • Health & Wellness: 100% employer-paid premiums for medical, dental, and vision for employees.ย
  • Retirement: 401(k) with up to a 4% company match.ย

Employees are eligible for an annual cash bonus based on firm and individual performance. Actual compensation will depend on experience, education, and internal equity.
