We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Environmental Department. This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for an Environmental Engineer.  The work schedule is 7 am - 4pm.

PURPOSE AND FUNCTIONS

The Environmental Engineer supports implementation and management of environmental compliance programs to ensure company operations meet federal, state, and local regulatory requirements. The position assists in environmental permitting, monitoring, reporting, and program development related to hazardous materials management, waste minimization, air emissions, stormwater and wastewater discharge, and other environmental compliance initiatives. The role works under the direction of the Senior Environmental Engineer and Environmental Engineering Manager to support regulatory compliance and environmental program operations.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & CERTIFICATIONS

  • Required Education
    • Associate of Science Degree in Environmental Engineering or related field (e.g., environmental/chemical engineering, chemistry, biology, or other environmental science discipline)
  • Required Experience
    • Minimum 0-3 years of experience in environmental compliance, environmental engineering, or related environmental programs.
  • Preferred Experience
    • Prior environmental compliance experience in an industrial, manufacturing, shipyard, or maritime environment
  • Certifications/Licenses
    • Ability to obtain a Class 3 Wastewater Works Operator License (Virginia) within 12 months of hire
  • Regulatory/working knowledge of environmental regulatory programs application to industrial operations including:
    • Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
    • Clean Air Act (CAA)
    • National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
    • Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure programs (SPCC)
    • Stormwater management and industrial discharge permitting requirements
    • Prior environmental compliance experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or maritime environment preferred

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Key Duties
    • Assist in developing and coordinating compliance programs related to hazardous materials and waste management, waste minimization/source reduction, air pollution control, and stormwater and wastewater discharge.
    • Develop working knowledge of environmental permitting processes and assist in obtaining or maintaining permits required for company operations.
    • Monitor environmental regulatory developments and assist in evaluating their applicability to company operations.
    • Assist in representing NASSCO-Norfolk during environmental inspections and regulatory meetings with local, state, and federal agencies.
    • Support environmental monitoring and reporting programs required by environmental regulations and permits.
    • Establish sampling and analysis procedures and assist in compiling, analyzing, and evaluating environmental monitoring data.
    • Prepare reports required for environmental compliance and regulatory documentation.
    • Assist in environmental incident or spill investigations and support preparation of required reports.
    • Provide technical support to environmental engineering staff and assist with environmental training for facility personnel.
    • Assist in wastewater treatment plant operations and support compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements.
    • Operate the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) under supervision of a licensed operator until obtaining the required certification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Walking, climbing, lifting, and standing during facility inspections
  • Ability to access shipyard facilities and occasionally board vessels
  • Exposure to dust, welding, burning fumes, smoke, and moderate noise levels during inspections.

  • Works closely with Senior Environmental Engineer, EHS Supervisors and team members, Operations and facility management, regulatory agencies and consultants

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to perform inspections throughout the shipyard and facility locations.
  • Ability to communicate environmental compliance information to operational personnel and management.
  • Be able to obtain DBIDS and NAVSEA badges
