What is an environmental engineering intern?

An environmental engineering intern is a student or entry-level professional gaining practical experience in environmental engineering tasks such as pollution control, site assessment, and sustainable design. They often work under supervision using tools like GIS and CAD and may assist with data collection, analysis, and report preparation during their internship period.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Environmental Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Engineer Intern, you typically need a foundational understanding of environmental science, engineering principles, and coursework toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with software like AutoCAD, GIS, and environmental modeling tools, as well as compliance knowledge such as OSHA or EPA regulations, is often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help interns excel in both fieldwork and reporting. These skills enable accurate data analysis, regulatory compliance, and successful collaboration on projects that protect public health and the environment.

How much do environmental internships pay?

Environmental engineer internships typically pay between $15 and $25 per hour, depending on the location, company, and level of education.
