Landscape Architects specialize in designing outdoor spaces like parks and gardens, with licensure typically required. While both roles involve environmental considerations, their scope and credentials differ, making them distinct careers within the design industry.

What does an environmental designer do?

An environmental designer accounts for all necessary environmental factors in the design of a construction project. Your daily job duties vary depending on your area of focus. In general, you work with an architect and other urban planners to observe potential work sites. You are typically involved in historical preservation and other conservation-related design activities, including solar lighting, energy efficiency, and effective use of natural surroundings. Environmental designers use their skills to limit the impact of the building process to the surrounding environment. The qualifications for advancing in this career include a master’s degree in environmental design, landscape architecture, or urban planning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an environmental designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Designer, you need a solid background in design principles, sustainability practices, and often a degree in environmental design, architecture, or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, GIS systems, and green building certifications like LEED is typically required. Strong collaboration, creative problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you work with multidisciplinary teams and engage stakeholders. These skills ensure the creation of functional, sustainable spaces that balance human needs with environmental responsibility.

What is an environmental designer?

Environmental designers are professionals who plan, design, and create physical spaces with a focus on sustainability, functionality, and aesthetics. They integrate architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, and environmental science to improve the relationship between people and their surroundings. Their goal is to create environments—both indoor and outdoor—that are both pleasing and environmentally responsible. Environmental designers often work on projects such as parks, buildings, campuses, and urban spaces, ensuring that their designs minimize negative impacts on the natural environment while enhancing quality of life.

How do environmental designers typically collaborate with other professionals during a project?

Environmental Designers frequently work in multidisciplinary teams, collaborating closely with architects, engineers, urban planners, and landscape architects to create sustainable and functional spaces. Regular meetings and design charrettes are common, where team members share ideas and resolve challenges together. Effective communication and the ability to integrate feedback from various stakeholders are essential, as Environmental Designers often synthesize input from clients, regulatory agencies, and community groups throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Perform drafting checks (dimensions, fit, tolerances, completeness)
  • Coordinate with engineers and other disciplines to ensure alignment with project requirements
  • Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback from engineering
  • Assist in resolving design issues during fabrication, construction, and commissioning
  • Ensure all deliverables comply with project specifications, company standards, and applicable codes
  • Contribute to the improvement of drafting standards, workflows, and best practices

  • 5 to 10 years of experience in mechanical drafting and platework design within the mining or mineral processing industry
  • Strong experience in the design of chutes, hoppers, bins, liners, and platework structures
  • Proven experience producing detailed fabrication drawings and workshop-ready packages
  • Strong understanding of platework fabrication, welding practices, and material handling equipment
  • Experience in 3D modelling and production of 2D drawings from 3D models
  • Understanding of structural interfaces and coordination with multidisciplinary teams
  • Familiarity with relevant codes, standards, and best practices (imperial and metric)
  • Experience in EPC/EPCM environments, including exposure to construction and commissioning
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in CAD software for 2D and 3D design (e.g., AutoCAD, Advance Steel, or similar tools)

Additional Assets:

  • Knowledge of wear materials, liners, and material flow considerations
  • Experience working with fabricators and reviewing shop drawings
  • Ability to optimize designs for fabrication and installation efficiency
