Job description

Ready to build a criminal defense career with real courtroom experience?

Combs Waterkotte is hiring a Criminal Defense Attorney to join its growing defense team. This is a strong opportunity for an attorney who wants meaningful casework, regular court appearances, direct client contact, and the chance to grow inside a busy, trial-focused criminal defense firm.

At Combs Waterkotte, attorneys handle serious criminal matters where the stakes are high and the work matters. The firm represents clients facing DWI/DUI, drug charges, violent crimes, domestic violence, sex crimes, gun charges, federal crimes, traffic offenses, orders of protection, appeals, and other criminal allegations.

This role is for someone who wants to do the work, not just watch from the sidelines. Attorneys at Combs Waterkotte are trusted with responsibility, supported by an experienced team, and given the opportunity to develop as advocates through hands-on courtroom experience.

What You’ll Do:
• Manage an active criminal defense caseload
• Appear in court for hearings, docket calls, negotiations, and trials
• Communicate directly with clients about case strategy, updates, and next steps
• Review discovery and case evidence
• Draft motions, pleadings, correspondence, and other legal documents
• Negotiate with prosecutors
• Prepare cases for hearings and trial
• Work closely with attorneys, legal assistants, and support staff
• Help clients navigate some of the most difficult moments of their lives

What We’re Looking For:
• J.D. from an accredited law school
• Active Missouri & Illinois law licenses
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong legal writing and analytical ability
• Professional, reliable, organized, and responsive
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced legal environment
• Genuine interest in criminal defense
• Courtroom experience or a strong desire to build it

Why Join Combs Waterkotte:
Combs Waterkotte has handled more than 10,000 cases and is known for serious, client-centered criminal defense across Missouri and Illinois. The firm combines aggressive advocacy with preparation, communication, and a team-based approach to helping clients protect their freedom, reputation, career, and future.

This is not a role where you sit around waiting years for courtroom experience. This is a chance to work on real cases, serve real clients, and grow with a firm that has an established criminal defense practice and a strong reputation.

Benefits Include:
• Competitive pay
• 401(k)
• Health insurance
• PTO
• Cell phone support
• Gas card
• Bar dues and CLE coverage
• Private parking
• Supportive, team-oriented work environment

If you are an attorney who wants meaningful criminal defense work, real courtroom exposure, and a team that will support your growth, we encourage you to apply.
