How much do environmental consultant jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 20, 2026, the average yearly pay for environmental consultant in the United States is $56,151.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $37,500.00 and $59,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an environmental consultant?

Environmental consultants are professionals who provide expert advice and services to help organizations comply with environmental regulations, manage environmental risks, and improve sustainability practices. They assess the impact of projects on the environment, conduct site assessments, and recommend solutions to minimize negative effects. Their work often involves environmental audits, waste management planning, and helping clients obtain necessary permits. Environmental consultants work with businesses, governments, and nonprofit organizations across various industries.

What does an environmental consultant do?

As an environmental consultant, your job is to provide information about land and water contamination, environmental impacts, and environmental management systems. You may perform site assessments, recommend specific types of inspections, or test for pollutants in the water, air, and soil of a specific site. On occasion, you provide expert advice in courtrooms or for companies planning on buying a site. Most environmental consultants work in groups and take directions from a project manager, but you complete some of your surveying duties independently. Expect to spend a moderate amount of time writing reports and detailing your findings for your client.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an environmental consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Consultant, you need a solid background in environmental science, data analysis, and relevant regulations, usually supported by a degree in environmental studies or a related field. Familiarity with environmental impact assessment tools, geographic information systems (GIS), and certifications such as ISO 14001 are commonly required. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and project management skills help consultants effectively interact with clients and stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for delivering accurate assessments, ensuring regulatory compliance, and providing actionable recommendations to protect the environment.

What are the main challenges an environmental consultant faces when working on multiple projects simultaneously?

Environmental Consultants often juggle several projects at once, each with its own deadlines, regulatory requirements, and client expectations. This can present challenges in time management, prioritizing tasks, and ensuring clear communication across diverse stakeholders. Staying organized and adaptable is essential, as consultants must frequently switch between fieldwork, report writing, and client meetings. Collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of environmental regulations also play a key role in managing these challenges.

What is the difference between Environmental Consultant vs Environmental Scientist?

AspectEnvironmental ConsultantEnvironmental Scientist
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related fields; certifications like LEED or EIA often preferredBachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Ecology, or related disciplines; research-focused certifications
Work EnvironmentClient sites, consulting firms, government agencies; project-based workResearch labs, universities, field sites; data collection and analysis
Employer & Industry UsageConsulting firms, government agencies, private companiesResearch institutions, academia, government research labs

Environmental Consultants primarily advise clients on environmental compliance, remediation, and sustainable practices, often working directly with businesses and government agencies. Environmental Scientists focus on conducting research, analyzing environmental data, and advancing scientific understanding. While both roles require environmental expertise, Consultants are more client-facing and project-oriented, whereas Scientists are research-driven and data-focused.

Ricondo team members are passionate about working alongside airport management to solve the complex issues facing the aviation industry today. Our team provides strategic planning services to airports around the world, including operational and physical planning, master planning, environmental reviews, and business advisory services. As a consultant, you will work independently and will collaborate with our diverse team to address environmental and regulatory issues associated with airport infrastructure project development and operation. Core Responsibilities

  • Research, collect, analyze, and document environmental, operational, and land use data in support of airport planning, environmental, and sustainability studies.
  • Prepare draft sections of reports and presentations, including text, tables, charts, and exhibits based on research, verbal and written input from others, and self-directed effort.
  • Assist with preparing for and coordinating team meetings, client meetings, public workshops, and agency meetings.
  • Respond to requests for data and information from internal staff and external clients, organizations, regulatory agencies, and the public.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field that provides a strong foundation for environmental planning, such as environmental studies, environmental policy, urban planning, environmental engineering, geography, or biology.
  • 0-3 years of increasingly responsible experience in environmental planning or related field.
  • Familiarity with the aviation industry or desire to learn and grow in the aviation industry.
  • Ability to travel occasionally.

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Experience/training in the area of planning or one or more environmental issues facing airports, such as air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, aircraft noise, historic resources, biotic species, land use, water resources.

Additional Preferred Technical Skills

  • Familiarity with FAA rules, regulations, guidelines, and other planning/design guidance documents.
  • Working knowledge of airport setting and complexities associated with airport planning projects and associated environmental processing.

Competencies

  • Ability to research, develop, organize, and analyze information, and formulate effective recommendations.
  • Ability to consult with fellow employees and senior staff concerning the compilation, interpretation, and presentation of research data for airport environmental studies.
  • Ability to express ideas and information, clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with supervisors and fellow employees.

Soft Skills

  • Self-motivated
  • Detail-oriented
  • Proactive and effective communicator
  • Highly organized

Competitive Benefits Package

  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan with employer match depending on company performance
  • 100% Employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage
  • Generous paid time-off program for sick leave and vacation time
  • Company-paid holidays
  • Tuition reimbursement program
  • Professional certification, licensure, and association membership funding
  • Professional conferences and seminars
  • Internal workshops and webinars
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance coverage
  • Life insurance (survivor benefits)
  • Team member referral bonus program
  • Flexible spend accounts (medical and dependent care)
  • Transit commuter benefit (based upon location)

The base pay range for this role is $62,000–$88,000. The base salary range/hourly rate established for a job offer is dependent on job-related, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, education, and skills.
