Environment Consulting information

What are some common challenges faced by environment consultants when working on client projects?

Environment consultants often encounter challenges such as navigating complex regulatory requirements, balancing client expectations with environmental best practices, and managing tight project deadlines. Additionally, projects may involve coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, scientists, and government officials, which requires strong communication and collaboration skills. Being adaptable and proactive in finding practical solutions is essential for success in this dynamic and impactful field.

What is environmental consulting?

Environmental consulting is a professional service that helps organizations comply with environmental regulations and address environmental challenges. Environmental consultants assess the impact of projects on the environment, help with permitting and compliance, and provide advice on sustainability and remediation. They often conduct site assessments, manage environmental risks, and develop strategies to reduce negative environmental impacts. Consultants work with businesses, government agencies, and non-profits to ensure projects are environmentally responsible and legally compliant.

Do environmental consultants get paid well?

Environmental consultants typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, education, and location. Entry-level positions may start lower, but experienced consultants with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher wages, often supplemented by bonuses or project-based pay.

Is there a demand for environmental consultants?

Environmental consultants are in high demand due to increasing environmental regulations, climate change concerns, and the need for sustainable practices across industries. Job growth is expected to be faster than average, with skills in environmental assessment, regulatory compliance, and data analysis being particularly valuable. Certifications such as LEED or environmental impact assessment experience can enhance job prospects.

How do I get into environmental consulting?

To enter environmental consulting, a bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, or a related field is typically required. Gaining experience through internships, developing skills in data analysis and environmental regulations, and obtaining certifications like the Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) can improve job prospects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Environmental Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Consultant, you need expertise in environmental science, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a relevant degree such as environmental engineering or environmental science. Familiarity with GIS software, environmental impact assessment tools, and certifications like LEED or ISO 14001 are often required. Strong analytical thinking, communication skills, and project management abilities help consultants effectively interpret data and work with diverse stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for delivering accurate advice, ensuring legal compliance, and supporting sustainable solutions for clients.

What is the difference between Environment Consulting vs Environmental Technician?

Environmental Technicians perform hands-on fieldwork, collecting data and conducting tests to support environmental assessments. While both roles require environmental knowledge, consulting focuses on analysis and recommendations, whereas technicians focus on data collection and field operations.

What does an environmental consultant actually do?

An environmental consultant assesses environmental conditions and advises clients on compliance with regulations, pollution control, and sustainable practices. They conduct site inspections, analyze data, prepare reports, and recommend solutions using tools like GIS and environmental sampling techniques.

Job Description
Location: NYC
Are you a senior consultant ready to build a book, grow a market, and lead a team? We're hiring a Principal Environmental Scientist/Engineer to team with us to grow our office in Midtown Manhattan, placing you at the center of one of the region's most dynamic business hubs with exceptional access to clients, partners, and transit. This is a growth role for a seller-doer leader: you'll set the go-to-market approach, open doors with new and existing clients, and deliver high-impact work-supported by strong technical resources and collaborative colleagues.
If this sounds interesting to you, and you're curious to learn more, then this role could be the perfect opportunity for you. Join our Environment and Health department as our new Principal and work with us to close the gap to a sustainable future. We're looking for an established principal with a solid presence in the New York City market, 15+ years of consulting experience, and a track record of winning and expanding client work. Your expertise may span permitting and compliance, site assessment/remediation, air quality, due diligence, sustainability/ESG and decarbonization, energy transition, or environmental data services. If you thrive on relationship-building, shaping solutions, and creating growth, this role is built for you.
Your impact (growth & leadership)
As a Principal, you'll serve as a trusted advisor and market-facing growth leader-owning priority accounts, developing new client relationships, and building a durable pipeline for the region. You'll pair technical credibility with commercial leadership to help clients manage environmental risk, meet regulatory obligations, and advance sustainability goals across sectors such as manufacturing, commercial/industrial, government, energy, financial services, insurance, and legal.
Your key responsibilities will be:
  • Drive growth: build and execute a regional client development plan; cultivate relationships and open new opportunities.
  • Win work: qualify leads, shape scopes, price strategically, and lead proposals/interviews through close.
  • Grow accounts: deepen trusted-advisor relationships, identify cross-sell opportunities, and expand multi-service programs.
  • Lead delivery: oversee complex engagements (scope/schedule/budget/quality) and bring the right experts to solve client challenges.
  • Build the team: mentor and develop staff, support recruiting, and create repeatable delivery and sales playbooks.
  • Represent the firm: engage with clients, regulators, and industry groups; speak/publish as appropriate to raise visibility.

About you
From the moment you start at Ramboll, we will support your personal and professional development so that you can continue to grow with the company. While we look forward to supporting your continued learning and development, for this role we have identified some qualifications, skills, and capabilities that will set you up for success.
These include:
  • 15+ years in environmental consulting with progressive leadership responsibility.
  • Business development success-evidence of consistently winning work (e.g., annual sales targets achieved, repeatable proposal wins, measurable account growth).
  • A strong professional network in New York City or the Northeast; an existing book of business.
  • Technical depth in one or more practice areas (e.g., permitting/compliance, site assessment/remediation, air quality, sustainability/ESG, energy transition, due diligence, environmental data services) with the ability to translate expertise into client value.
  • Strong program/project leadership (scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk) and the ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Relevant degree in environmental science, engineering, geology, chemistry, or a related field; professional certifications/licensure (e.g., PE, PG) are a plus.

Why this role
  • Growth runway: define and expand our New York City market presence with leadership visibility.
  • Seller-doer platform: autonomy to lead pursuits plus support from technical specialists and delivery teams.
  • Strategic influence: shape offerings, pricing, and account strategies that drive repeatable growth.
  • Leadership opportunity: mentor talent, help recruit, and build a practice with staying power.
  • Flexibility & balance: hybrid work options.
  • The long-term thinking of a foundation-owned company.
  • Competitive base pay and incentive programs.
  • Support of external memberships, conference and engagements.

If you're excited by the chance to build a market, grow client partnerships, and lead a high-performing team, we encourage you to apply-even if you don't check every box. We're open to Environmental Scientists or Engineers and will align the portfolio to your strengths and growth goals.
