What is geology consulting?

Geology consulting involves providing expert advice and services related to earth sciences, such as evaluating soil and rock conditions, assessing natural resources, and helping manage environmental risks. Consulting geologists often work with industries like construction, mining, oil and gas, and environmental management to ensure projects comply with regulations and are geologically sound. Their work may include site investigations, environmental assessments, and recommending solutions for geological challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a geology consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Geology Consultant, you need a solid background in earth sciences, geological mapping, and data analysis, often supported by a relevant degree and professional certification (such as P.Geo or equivalent). Familiarity with GIS software, modeling tools, and laboratory analysis systems is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and project management skills help you effectively convey findings to clients and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure accurate geological assessments, informed decision-making, and successful project outcomes in various industries.

What are common challenges faced by geology consultants when working on multiple projects simultaneously?

Geology consultants often juggle several projects at once, each with its unique objectives, timelines, and client expectations. Managing time effectively and prioritizing tasks can be challenging, especially when unexpected field conditions or data delays occur. Clear communication with clients and team members is essential to set realistic deadlines and ensure projects stay on track. Adapting quickly to changing project scopes and maintaining accurate documentation are also key to successfully handling multiple assignments.

What is the difference between Geology Consulting vs Geotechnical Engineering?

AspectGeology ConsultingGeotechnical Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Geology, often with certifications like PG or GITBachelor's or Master's in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, with PE license
Work EnvironmentFieldwork, site assessments, environmental impact studiesDesign, analysis, foundation and earthwork projects
Industry UsageEnvironmental agencies, consulting firms, mining, oil & gasConstruction, infrastructure, tunneling, foundation design

While both roles involve earth sciences, Geology Consulting focuses on site assessments, environmental impact, and geological surveys, whereas Geotechnical Engineering emphasizes foundation design, soil stability, and construction support. Understanding these differences helps clients choose the right expertise for their projects.

How much does a geology consulting make?

Geology consultants typically earn between $60,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and project complexity. Senior consultants or those with specialized skills can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $120,000. Compensation may also include benefits such as health insurance and professional development opportunities.

What does a geology consulting do?

A geology consulting professional provides expert advice on geological conditions, such as soil stability, mineral resources, and environmental impact, to support construction, mining, or environmental projects. They conduct field investigations, analyze data using tools like GIS and geological software, and prepare reports to inform decision-making and ensure safety and compliance.

Job description

Project Geologist or Engineer

Campbell or Capitola, California

Why C2Earth is more than just a job

Imagine working at a firm that combines technical rigor, real-world impact, and deep respect for place. That's C2Earth. We're a privately held, majority Black-owned small business doing thoughtful, problem-solving engineering geology and geotechnical work throughout the greater San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas.

At C2Earth, you'll inherit a legacy: the reputation of Upp Geotechnology (founded in 1983) plus the innovative spark and commitment brought by our founders, Craig Reid and Chris Hundemer. We're more than "consultants" -- we're advisors, protectors, and enablers. Our work touches everything from safety (schools, hospitals, essential buildings) to beauty (coastal bluffs, parks) to infrastructure that supports thriving communities.

When you join us, you join a team with decades of combined experience, with project files going back to the early 1980s. We've seen it all -- small residential additions, complex slope stabilization, liquefaction hazards, coastal erosion, distressed buildings, and critical infrastructure. Whether it's solving for a retaining wall, a foundation, or a bluff subject to sea level rise, we don't just do the work -- we do it with care, precision, and purpose.

The Role: What You'll Do
  • Manage geotechnical and geologic projects from proposal through completion with oversight from senior staff.
  • Conduct field investigations including drilling, logging, sampling, geologic mapping, and construction observation.
  • Analyze soil, rock, and groundwater data to prepare technical evaluations and engineering recommendations.
  • Draft clear, well-organized reports, proposals, and correspondence for clients and regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinate with engineers, architects, contractors, and public officials to ensure effective project delivery.
  • Balance field and office work while developing project management and leadership skills.
Why You'll Love Working Here

Impact & Variety: You'll work on projects ranging from residential developments to critical infrastructure -- every week brings something new.

Career Growth: Direct mentorship from licensed Engineering Geologists and Geotechnical Engineers, with a clear path toward professional licensure.

Small Enough to Matter, Big Enough to Deliver: Your work will be visible, meaningful, and valued by both the team and our clients.

Integrity & Client Focus: We hold ourselves to the highest technical standards while balancing safety, cost, and constructability.

Culture of Ownership & Respect: As a minority-owned firm, we take pride in the way we serve our clients, our team, and our community.

What We're Looking For
  • A degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or Civil Engineering with a geotechnical focus.
  • 3-7 years of relevant professional experience in geotechnical or engineering geology consulting.
  • Progress toward California professional licensure (GIT, EIT, PG, PE, or CEG/GE) is preferred.
  • Strong field skills including soil/rock logging, geologic mapping, and construction observation.
  • Solid writing and communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Team-oriented mindset, curiosity, and initiative to take ownership of your work.
Perks & Practical Info

Location: Based in Campbell (San Francisco Bay Area) with a second office in Capitola serving Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay.

Compensation: Competitive salary and benefits package.

Flexibility: A healthy mix of office and field work to keep your career dynamic.

Growth: Support for licensure, continuing education, and building areas of specialization.

Project Diversity: Exposure to coastal, urban, hillside, and infrastructure projects across Northern California.

Join Us & Build Something Solid

If you're an early- to mid-career geologist or engineer who wants to work on meaningful projects, grow into greater responsibility, and be part of a firm that values quality and integrity, we want you on our team. At C2Earth, you'll do work that matters -- for clients, for communities, and for the land itself.
