Position Overview

The GIS Technician I is an entry-level position responsible for maintaining, analyzing, and displaying geographic information using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software. Under the supervision of senior GIS staff, the technician assists with mapping projects, data management, field data collection, as-built construction processing and technical support for departments that rely on spatial data.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create, edit, and maintain GIS elements and spatial databases.
  • Collect, verify, and update geographic data from field surveys, GPS equipment, aerial imagery, and other sources.
  • Assist with geospatial analysis to support planning, engineering, design, splicing and construction departments.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of GIS data and procedures.
  • Respond to requests for maps, spatial data, and GIS support.
  • Import, convert, and integrate data from multiple formats and sources.
  • Follow established GIS standards, policies, and best practices.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of GIS principles and cartography.
  • Familiarity with GPS technology and spatial data collection methods.
  • Understanding of coordinate systems, projections, and geodatabases.
  • Strong Google Suite experience (Google Sheets, docs, Gmail, Meet and Chat) and Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze data and identify errors.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with M4 Solutions, IQGeo, QGIS, ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  • Familiarity with SQL, FME, Katapult and AutoCAD

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer.
