What types of projects and technologies are entry software developers typically assigned to when starting out?

As an entry software developer, you can expect to work on foundational tasks such as bug fixes, feature enhancements, or simple modules within larger applications. You will often be introduced to the company's tech stack, which may include popular programming languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, and tools for version control and collaboration, such as Git and Jira. These initial assignments are designed to help you become familiar with the codebase and development workflow while supporting more experienced team members. Collaboration with mentors and participation in code reviews are common, providing learning opportunities and feedback to help you grow in your role.

What is an entry software developer?

Entry software developers are professionals who are new to the software development field, typically with less than two years of experience. They are responsible for writing, testing, and maintaining code under the supervision of more experienced developers. Entry-level developers often work on smaller tasks or projects while learning best practices, tools, and methodologies used in software engineering. This role is ideal for recent graduates or individuals transitioning into tech, as it provides foundational experience and growth opportunities within a development team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry software developer?

To thrive as an Entry Software Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), algorithms, and data structures, usually backed by a computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and basic knowledge of databases or cloud platforms is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, willingness to learn, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills enable new developers to contribute efficiently to projects, adapt to evolving technologies, and collaborate successfully within development teams.

Can I be an entry software developer with no experience?

Entry-level software developer positions often do not require prior professional experience and focus on fundamental programming skills, such as knowledge of languages like Java, Python, or C++, and understanding of basic software development concepts. Candidates can improve their chances by completing relevant coursework, personal projects, or certifications to demonstrate their skills. Employers may also consider internships or coding bootcamps as valuable experience for these roles.

About the Organization
Now is a great time to join Redhorse Corporation. We are a solution-driven company delivering data insights and technology solutions to customers with missions critical to U.S. national interests. We're looking for thoughtful, skilled professionals who thrive as trusted partners building technology-agnostic solutions and want to apply their talents supporting customers with difficult and important mission sets.

About the Role

Redhorse transforms the way government uses data and technology. To support this mission, we are seeking a Software Developer to build and modernize the applications that power essential government business functions. In this role, you will do more than just write code; you will analyze complex functional requirements in areas like finance, logistics, and personnel to design systems that are efficient and scalable. By bridging the gap between software engineering and cloud infrastructure, you will play a vital role in helping our government partners operate with greater speed and transparency.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze functional business applications and design specifications for domains such as finance, accounting, personnel, manpower, logistics, and contracts.
  • Translate detailed technical designs and logic flow charts into robust, high-quality computer software.
  • Develop and maintain block diagrams and logic flow charts to document system architecture and data flow.
  • Test, debug, and refine computer software to ensure it meets all functional requirements and mission objectives.
  • Deploy and configure application services using IaaS providers including AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Compute Engine.
  • Configure and manage Linux-based servers to ensure the reliable delivery of dynamic web applications.
  • Architect solutions for continuous integration (CI), continuous deployment (CD), and continuous monitoring.
  • Work with containerization technologies such as Docker, LXC, or Rocket to streamline development and deployment.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance software to reduce operating time and improve overall system efficiency.
  • Prepare comprehensive program-level and user-level documentation for all developed products.Provide technical direction and mentorship to other programmers to ensure all project deadlines are met.
  • Design information systems and develop complex software tailored for large-scale Database Management Systems (DBMS).
Required Experience/Clearance
  • Active TS/SCI with Polygraph
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 4+ years of professional experience in software development and information system design.
  • Demonstrated experience with application programming on large-scale DBMS.
  • Proven ability to translate complex design specifications into functional software.
  • Strong proficiency in testing, debugging, and refining software to satisfy specific design objectives.
Desired Experience
We encourage all candidates who meet the basic requirements to apply, even if you do not have any of the following experience:
  • Hands-on experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or Salt.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native monitoring and logging tools.
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment using tools like Jira and GitLab.
  • Background in developing applications for government functional areas (e.g., Manpower, Logistics).
  • Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles.
$140,000 - $165,000 a year
The salary range provided for this position represents the anticipated base salary for successful candidates. Actual compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including relevant experience, education, certifications, skills, security clearance level, geographic location, market conditions, and internal equity. In addition to base salary, eligible employees may participate in Redhorse's comprehensive benefits programs and may be eligible for performance-based or other incentive compensation, where applicable.
