Remote Dod Software Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote DoD Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote DoD Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, knowledge of secure software development practices, and a relevant degree—often with active security clearance. Familiarity with languages like Java, C++, or Python, experience with DoD-approved development environments, and certifications such as Security+ or CISSP are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-motivation are vital soft skills for remote collaboration and adhering to strict security protocols. These skills ensure the development of secure, reliable software that meets defense standards while maintaining effective teamwork and compliance in a remote setting.

What is a Remote DoD Software Engineer?

A Remote DoD Software Engineer is a professional who develops, tests, and maintains software systems for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) while working from a remote location. These engineers play a critical role in creating secure and reliable applications that support military and defense operations. They must often meet strict security and technical requirements, including obtaining security clearances and following DoD-specific software development standards. Remote DoD Software Engineers collaborate with multidisciplinary teams using secure communication tools and are responsible for ensuring their work complies with government regulations and cybersecurity protocols.

What are some unique challenges faced by Remote DoD Software Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote DoD Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to secure access and communication, since much of their work involves handling sensitive or classified information. Navigating stringent cybersecurity protocols, such as working within secure VPNs or using government-approved devices, can be complex and may require additional onboarding. To address these challenges, engineers should proactively communicate with IT and security teams, stay updated on compliance requirements, and leverage secure collaboration tools provided by their organization. Building strong virtual relationships with teammates and participating in regular check-ins also help maintain project momentum and cohesion.

This program provides software development and technical support services to sustain, enhance, and optimize a critical customer system through secure, scalable, and maintainable software solutions.
The successful candidate will lead the architectural design and development of modern software capabilities while ensuring solutions are built using nonproprietary, open-standard technologies that support scalability, maintainability, reliability, and long-term mission success. This role will provide technical leadership across the software development lifecycle, collaborating with software engineers, DevSecOps professionals, testers, database administrators, and Agile team members to deliver high-quality, secure software solutions.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the architectural design and technical implementation of scalable, maintainable, reliable, and secure software solutions using open-standard technologies.
  • Develop and maintain software solutions using modern Java enterprise development practices and industry-standard frameworks.
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain clean, efficient, secure source code within Government-owned Git repositories.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to software development teams, promoting best practices in architecture, coding standards, and secure development.
  • Participate in and conduct mandatory peer code reviews to ensure software quality, maintainability, and adherence to established standards.
  • Ensure software meets automated quality and security requirements through continuous integration, automated testing, and Static Application Security Testing (SAST).
  • Analyze and remediate software vulnerabilities, ensuring all new Blocker, Critical, and High security findings are addressed prior to task completion.
  • Identify, evaluate, and execute technical debt remediation efforts based on Government priorities.
  • Maintain and improve software quality metrics, including: minimum 90% automated test coverage for new code, overall SonarQube code quality rating of "A", inline documentation for at least 90% of individual methods using tool-compatible formats.
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to ensure compliance with DoD Risk Management Framework (RMF) processes and Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) requirements.
  • Research, prototype, and evaluate emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), low-code/no-code platforms, and AI-assisted software development tools.
  • Mentor software engineers and promote adoption of modern development practices, tools, and technologies.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on software quality, performance, security, and mission effectiveness.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience developing Java enterprise applications.
  • Strong experience with: Java enterprise application development, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs and Microservices architectures.
  • Experience with software quality and security tools, including: SonarQube, GitLab CI/CD, Static Application Security and Testing (SAST) tools.
  • Experience developing secure software solutions within a DevSecOps environment.
  • Familiarity with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standards.
  • Experience supporting DoD cybersecurity requirements, including Risk Management Framework (RMF) and STIG compliance.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, secure coding practices, and modern development methodologies.
  • Active Secret Security Clearance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting DoD software modernization programs.
  • Experience with U.S. Air Force or other DoD mission applications.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating artificial intelligence/machine learning capabilities into software solutions.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools to improve software engineering efficiency.
  • Experience with cloud-native architectures and DevSecOps practices.
  • Experience mentoring and leading software engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies and Scrum practices.
