Description
Position Summary
The Accessioning & Grossing Technician is responsible for receipt of fixed tissue specimens, reading and interpreting requisition forms, entering sample information into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), examining, measuring and preparing specimens for testing, and storing samples in accordance with laboratory procedures.
  • Shift: Tues-Sat, 10:00 AM - 6:30 PM
  • Training Schedule: M-F, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

What you'll be doing
  • Receive specimens from daily deliveries, auditing delivery quality and time of receipt including signing for packages
  • Accession patient specimens according to SOPs, with strict adhering to our Quality Assurance standards
  • Accurately and efficiently enter required patient and specimen information into the LIS system
  • Examine and measure for suitability of tissue processing upon receipt of specimens
  • Prepare laboratory specimens for testing
  • Label laboratory specimens and fill documentation accurately and appropriately
  • Assist with resolving accessing issues to including but not limited to sample or requisition discrepancies, and missing information.
  • Review, understand and execute customer-specific requirements for order entry
  • Creating patient charts and filing test report information into the charts.
  • Maintain adequate inventory for accessioning and grossing activities.
  • Adhere to uphold all applicable federal and state compliance regulations as well as company compliance policies and procedures, accrediting agency policy and procedures and applicable healthcare fraud and wage and abuse laws
  • Work closely with the Client Services, Quality, and other departments as needed to resolve and escalate incomplete or unclear order issues to promote good and timely customer service
  • Participate in continuing education and staff meetings as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
What you'll need:
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Prior experience working in Laboratory or other clinical diagnostics setting preferred
  • Prior professional experience with accessioning and/or anatomic pathology preferred
  • Prior use of laboratory information management systems preferred
  • Must be able to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and strong attention to detail and appreciation for quality controls in a medical office or related healthcare setting
  • Familiarity and comfort with medical terminology and phrases
  • Must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced high-volume environment
  • Knowledge of business software applications (Microsoft Office)
  • Experience with a Laboratory Information System preferred
  • Ability to adapt to changing procedures, policies, and work environment
  • Understanding of HIPAA and importance of privacy of patient data

Education, Certifications, and Licensures
  • BS in chemical, or biological sciences from an accredited intuition, or otherwise meets high complexity testing qualifications for the scope of testing.

  • Ability to use copiers, fax machines, and PDF scanners to keep inventory and ordering records. Visual acuity and analytical skill to distinguish sufficient detail.
  • Must possess the ability to sit or stand for long periods.
  • Must possess the ability to perform repetitive motion.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • May have exposure to biohazardous material in the lab environment. Exposure to xylene, paraformaldehyde, and alcohol, which emit fumes. Xylene is a known carcinogen and paraformaldehyde is a suspected carcinogen.
  • Working with tissue that may contain blood-borne pathogens and use sharps. Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended and offered by the employer.
