Program Overview
The System Administrator I supports NOAAโ€™s Earth System Research Laboratories (ESRL) and the N-Wave national network program by providing entry-level systems administration and IT operations support across research, scientific computing, and enterprise environments.
Position Overview
RIVA Solutions is seeking a System Administrator I to support IT operations in a Federal scientific research environment. This role provides foundational systems administration, customer support, asset management, and operational support services while developing expertise across enterprise infrastructure, cybersecurity, and Federal IT operations.
Core Responsibilities
  • Maintain data files and control procedures for networked personal computers and desktop systems connected to enterprise servers.
  • Ensure system security and data integrity through user account administration, password management, and resource monitoring.
  • Perform daily system backups and file restoration activities as required.
  • Monitor system availability and respond to routine user support requests.
  • Assist with installation, configuration, and maintenance of hardware and software on Windows systems.
  • Support IT asset tracking and inventory management using tools such as Sunflower.
  • Triage, document, and track user trouble tickets; escalate issues as appropriate.
  • Perform media sanitization and assist with equipment disposal activities in accordance with policy requirements.
  • Maintain detailed operational logs documenting system behavior and issues encountered.
  • Assist with creation and maintenance of systems documentation, operating procedures, and maintenance guides.
  • Support compliance with Federal cybersecurity requirements including FISMA and NIST standards.
  • Participate in on-call rotations supporting N-Wave network operations as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with ticketing system such as Service Desk Plus or similar systems.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows systems and experience supporting these systems.
  • Working knowledge of networking concepts including LAN, WLAN, TCP/IP, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and standard business application suites.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures and operational guidelines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust background investigation.
  • U.S. Citizen or otherwise authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Foundational knowledge UNIX/Linux, and/or macOS operating systems.
  • Experience with backup solutions such as Druva or similar technologies.
  • Familiarity with monitoring, endpoint management, and asset tracking tools including BigFix and TeamViewer.
  • Exposure to Federal cybersecurity frameworks including FISMA, NIST 800-53, and Risk Management Framework (RMF).
  • Experience using IT service management or ticketing platforms.
  • Experience supporting macOS managed environments using Jamf Pro and Apple Business Manager.
  • Interest in atmospheric research, scientific computing, or high-performance computing environments.
  • CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, or equivalent certification (or actively pursuing certification).
