Entry Level Solar Engineer information

What does an entry level solar engineer do?

An Entry Level Solar Engineer assists in the design, installation, and maintenance of solar energy systems. Their responsibilities often include conducting site assessments, creating technical drawings, performing basic calculations for system sizing, and supporting project management tasks. They also help troubleshoot issues, ensure compliance with safety standards, and stay updated on the latest solar technologies. This role provides foundational experience for a career in renewable energy engineering.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an entry level solar engineer?

To thrive as an Entry Level Solar Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electrical or mechanical engineering principles, basic solar energy concepts, and typically a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with AutoCAD, PVsyst, and other solar design software, as well as knowledge of relevant codes and standards, is commonly expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate system design, regulatory compliance, and successful project collaboration in the renewable energy sector.

What types of projects do entry level solar engineers typically work on, and how are responsibilities assigned within the team?

Entry Level Solar Engineers often participate in the design, analysis, and installation of residential, commercial, or utility-scale solar energy systems. Responsibilities are usually distributed based on project phases, with junior engineers focusing on tasks like site assessments, CAD drafting, energy output calculations, and supporting senior engineers during project development. Collaboration is key; entry-level engineers regularly coordinate with project managers, electricians, and other engineering disciplines to ensure projects meet technical standards and deadlines. This role provides a hands-on introduction to the solar industry and offers opportunities to gradually take on more complex assignments as experience grows.

What is the difference between Entry Level Solar Engineer vs Entry Level Renewable Energy Technician?

AspectEntry Level Solar EngineerEntry Level Renewable Energy Technician

Entry Level Field Technician

Job Description

The Entry Level Field Technician performs a variety of field testing, project-specific observations, and site assessment duties under general supervision and following detailed procedures. This role focuses on monitoring drilled piles and foundation installations, conducting soil and concrete tests, and documenting field activities to support civil engineering and construction projects. It offers significant overtime opportunities and a clear pathway into roles such as Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Technician or Inspector for long-term career growth.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor drilling piles, oversee foundation installation, and verify work complies with project plans, specifications, and procedures.
  • Perform field and laboratory testing on soil and concrete materials, collect samples, and ensure proper handling and documentation.
  • Complete observation forms, maintain detailed records, and prepare reports summarizing test results, findings, and site observations.
  • Support civil and geotechnical projects by conducting field activities safely in outdoor construction environments, including flexible and extended work schedules.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to read construction drawings and blueprints, understand field engineering practices, and operate testing equipment for quality inspections.
  • Strong written communication skills for reports and observations, with the ability to accurately use measuring tools such as tape measures and stopwatches.
  • Capable of lifting 30 to 50+ pounds, standing and walking for long periods, climbing, kneeling, and working in varying weather conditions.
  • Valid driver's license with a reliable driving record and willingness to work nights, weekends, overtime, overnight shifts, and extended schedules as project demands require.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience or familiarity with masonry, concrete, earthwork, rebar, and drilling operations.
  • Interest in construction materials testing (CMT) and inspection work, with a desire to transition into CMT Technician or Inspector roles.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain thorough and accurate documentation.
  • Motivation to pursue long-term growth opportunities within field engineering and construction testing.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, project-driven environment with changing priorities and schedules.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based and involves working on a large solar project near Nixon, Texas, as well as various commercial projects in and around the San Antonio area. The position requires daily work on active construction sites, including uneven terrain, open fields, and partially developed structures. You will work closely with civil and geotechnical teams and report into a departmental leadership structure. The schedule is intensive and project-driven, with frequent 10–12+ hour shifts and the potential to work 65–75 hours per week. Work may occur at any time of day or night, including early-morning concrete pours (such as at 12 a.m., 2 a.m., or 4 a.m.) and up to seven days a week, depending on project needs. The environment includes exposure to outdoor conditions such as heat, cold, wind, and inclement weather. You may be required to climb, kneel, squat, and work at various heights while performing tests and observations. Standard field attire suitable for construction sites is expected, including appropriate footwear and personal protective equipment provided or required according to site safety policies. The role offers significant overtime opportunities and a clear path for advancement into long-term positions in construction materials testing and inspection.
