Entry Level Solar Designer information

Is a career in solar worth it?

A career as an entry level solar designer can be worthwhile due to the growing demand for renewable energy solutions and the availability of training programs and certifications. The role involves designing solar panel systems, often requiring knowledge of electrical and mechanical principles, and offers opportunities for career growth in the renewable energy industry.

What is the difference between Entry Level Solar Designer vs Solar Installer?

AspectEntry Level Solar DesignerSolar Installer
Required CredentialsBasic technical knowledge, certifications like NABCEP AssociateRelevant certifications, OSHA safety training
Work EnvironmentOffice-based design work, site assessmentsOn-site installation and troubleshooting
Industry UsageDesigning solar systems, project planningPhysical installation of solar panels and equipment

Entry Level Solar Designers focus on creating system layouts and performing site assessments, often working in an office environment. Solar Installers physically install and maintain solar panels on-site. Both roles require safety certifications and industry knowledge, but differ mainly in their daily tasks and work settings.

How much do solar designers make?

Entry-level solar designers typically earn between $40,000 and $60,000 annually, depending on location, experience, and certifications. As they gain skills in design software and project management, their earning potential can increase. Salaries may also vary based on the complexity of projects and company size.

How to become a solar designer?

To become a solar designer, typically one needs a background in engineering, architecture, or a related field, along with knowledge of solar energy systems and design software such as AutoCAD or PVsyst. Gaining relevant certifications, like the NABCEP Solar PV Installer or Designer certification, can improve job prospects. Practical experience through internships or entry-level positions in solar installation companies is also valuable.

How to get into solar with no experience?

Entry level solar designer roles often require basic technical knowledge and familiarity with solar systems, which can be gained through online courses, certifications like NABCEP, or hands-on training programs. Gaining skills in electrical or mechanical work, and understanding solar design software such as PVsyst or Helios, can improve your chances of entry into the field without prior experience.
