Job Summary

The Plant Maintenance Engineer Apprentice is a semi-skilled worker assisting in the maintenance and repair of mechanical systems. The apprentice is responsible for assisting the Journeyman Plant Maintenance Engineer in the maintenance and repair of heating and cooling equipment and other mechanical systems. This position may perform simple repair or maintenance tasks independently. The Journeyman Plant Maintenance Engineer will provide detailed instructions and close supervision to the apprentice.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Washes, cleans and makes minor repairs, and assists in making major repairs to boilers.
  • Performs daily rounds of boiler room equipment throughout the campus, as needed.
  • Makes simple repairs and assists in making alterations and major repairs to plumbing, sewage systems, electrical wiring systems and equipment.
  • Cleans, oils and greases various types of mechanical equipment.
  • Recharges and maintains water softeners.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance to inspect clean, repair and replace belts, bearings, chains, seals, clutches, pulleys and mounts on fans, pumps, motors and other equipment on campus.
  • Maintains inventory of belts, grease, oil and supplies.
  • Maintains records of all repair, maintenance and replacement of equipment and building supplies
  • Inspects and maintains air conditioning units throughout the campus, cleaning coils, changing filters, adjusting/changing belts, and providing lubrication as needed.
  • Use multi-meters to read voltage, current and resistance values and troubleshoot basic circuits.
  • Performs generator switch-over test as needed.
  • Performs other fill-in duties on a seasonal basis or as workloads require.
Qualifications

Experience and Education Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be willing to obtain a MN Boiler Operator's Special License within 6 months

Essential Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of the practices involved in operating and maintaining heating, plumbing, ventilating and electrical systems and auxiliary appliances.
  • Knowledge of mechanical aptitude and ability for manual dexterity with work-related hand and power tools.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and tools, as well as bend, crouch, crawl, climb into spaces where equipment is located.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Develops and maintains good working relationships and communications at all levels of the organization.
  • Observes safety guidelines and follows safety procedures established by the university.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively alone and within a team environment.
