Entry Level Simulation Engineer information

What does an entry level simulation engineer do?

An Entry Level Simulation Engineer assists in developing, testing, and analyzing computer models that simulate real-world processes, such as mechanical systems, fluid dynamics, or electronic circuits. They work closely with senior engineers to interpret data, validate simulation results, and improve model accuracy. Their responsibilities often include running simulations, troubleshooting code, preparing technical reports, and learning industry-standard software. This role is foundational for gaining hands-on experience in engineering analysis and simulation tools.

What are some typical projects or tasks an entry level simulation engineer can expect to work on during their first year?

As an Entry Level Simulation Engineer, you can expect to work on supporting senior engineers with the development, testing, and validation of simulation models for products or systems. Your daily tasks may include setting up simulation environments, running computational analyses, documenting findings, and troubleshooting discrepancies between simulated and real-world results. You will likely collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, such as product design, software development, and testing, gaining exposure to a variety of engineering disciplines. This hands-on experience is valuable for building technical proficiency and understanding best practices in simulation within your industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level simulation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Simulation Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, mathematics, and computer science, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with simulation software such as MATLAB, Simulink, or ANSYS, as well as programming languages like Python or C++, is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and interpret complex data. These competencies ensure accurate model development, efficient troubleshooting, and successful project outcomes in engineering environments.

Job description

The Mannik & Smith Group (MSG) is a people-focused, award-winning, full-service consulting firm offering civil and geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, planning, landscape architecture, agriculture, surveying, and construction support. Our talented team of 650+ professionals delivers integrated planning, design, engineering, and construction solutions.

Build Things That Actually Matter (in Maumee, Ohio)
Somebody has to design the roads, drainage systems, and site layouts that make communities work - and we'd love for it to be you. MSG is seeking an Associate Civil Engineer to join our team in Detroit and get real, hands-on experience across land development, municipal, and infrastructure projects. No fetching coffee, no shadowing from a distance - you'll be involved in every stage of a project, from design and permitting through field support and construction documentation, with experienced engineers who are genuinely invested in helping you grow (and eventually get licensed).
And because we believe in backing that up with more than good intentions, this role comes with a guaranteed seat in Blueprint, our new early career leadership program for engineers looking to grow beyond the typical entry-level experience. Over six months, you'll take part in a hands-on curriculum covering professional development, business acumen, and project delivery - including case studies, simulations, and role-play exercises - covering topics like project economics, communication, and leadership fundamentals. It all wraps up with an in-person capstone event where you'll present your work and map out your goals for the year ahead. Your Future Starts With A Plan.
  • Develop civil engineering designs and drawings - site layouts, grading, drainage, utilities, and roadways - using AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Help navigate the permitting maze, preparing applications for local, state, and federal agencies (yes, it's a lot of acronyms - you'll get the hang of it)
  • Prepare engineering calculations, feasibility studies, and technical reports that actually inform design decisions
  • Collaborate with project managers, surveyors, and other engineering disciplines to deliver coordinated solutions
  • Support stormwater management and drainage design (prior software experience a plus, not a requirement)
  • Get out of the office for site visits and field inspections to see your designs come to life - and troubleshoot when they don't quite go as planned
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
  • 0-3 years of civil engineering design experience (land development or municipal projects preferred, but we know everyone starts somewhere)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and related engineering software
  • Genuine interest in stormwater management and site development design
  • EIT certification preferred (or a willingness to get there)
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Comfort working in a team-oriented, multidisciplinary environment
  • Motivation to grow professionally and pursue licensure (PE a plus)
#LI-DD1
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Health insurance with HSA option, Vision, Dental, Life
  • Flexible schedule
  • Paid time off
  • Referral program
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Catalytic Coaching - a personalized development plan built to grow your contributions today and your opportunities tomorrow. At MSG, bringing out the best in our people isn't a slogan - it's how we operate.
It is the policy of our company to follow equal employment opportunity procedures in compliance with federal, state and local criteria. We will provide all applicants for employment, and all employees, with equal opportunity without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, marital status, arrest record, disability, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, military or veteran status, and/or any other protected classes covered by any local, state and federal laws. The base salary range for this role is indicated in the posting. This range reflects the company's good faith estimate of the compensation for this position at the time of posting. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and geographic location.

About The Mannik & Smith Group

As one of the premier multi-disciplined consulting firms, we work with an exclusive collection of some of the best and fastest-growing private entities, municipalities, and governmental agencies in the region, nation, and around the globe.
