Recovery Specialist

Position Overview

The Recovery Specialist plays a vital role in supporting Persons in Recovery (PIRs) as they work toward achieving and maintaining wellness. This position provides peer-based support, advocacy, and education to empower individuals to take an active role in their recovery journey.

Serving as a role model, mentor, and motivator, the Recovery Specialist helps individuals build natural supports, develop community connections, and strengthen skills that promote long-term recovery and relapse prevention.


Key ResponsibilitiesPeer Support & Engagement
  • Utilize lived experience to build authentic, peer-to-peer relationships and support individuals in recovery
  • Serve as a role model, mentor, and advocate to promote hope and long-term recovery
  • Support individuals in identifying strengths and using personal assets to achieve recovery goals

Education & Support Services
  • Provide recovery-focused education to individuals, families, and staff
  • Facilitate or support participation in peer support groups (e.g., NA/AA, mutual aid groups)
  • Assist in developing Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) and relapse prevention strategies
  • Promote engagement in treatment and recovery-oriented activities

Care Coordination & Community Integration
  • Identify and connect individuals with community and natural supports
  • Support person-centered interventions as outlined in individualized service plans
  • Assist individuals in building social connections and increasing community involvement

Documentation & Compliance
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation in accordance with agency policies
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all regulatory and organizational standards

Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain personal wellness to effectively support and model recovery-oriented behaviors
  • Participate in training, team meetings, and ongoing development

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience supporting individuals in mental health and/or substance use recovery
  • Must self-identify as an individual with lived experience in mental health and/or substance use recovery

  • Ability to build trust and rapport through lived experience
  • Knowledge of recovery principles, relapse prevention, and peer support models
  • Cultural humility and respect for diverse recovery journeys
