Job Description

J.S. Held is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Field Technician to join our Industrial Hygiene & Built Environment practice in Phoenix, Arizona. This role involves performing field-based environmental testing, hazardous materials assessments, and supporting remediation, compliance, and industrial hygiene projects across a variety of commercial, industrial, and public-sector client sites.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience conducting environmental sampling and inspections, strong documentation skills, and a commitment to safety, quality, and regulatory compliance in dynamic field environments.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct on-site environmental inspections and monitoring for hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead-based paint, mold, and other indoor environmental concerns.
  • Perform air, bulk, wipe, water, and surface sampling in accordance with applicable regulatory standards and project-specific protocols.
  • Support indoor air quality (IAQ) assessments, moisture mapping, and environmental condition evaluations.
  • Assist with building surveys, hazard identification, and field investigations under the direction of Project Managers and Industrial Hygienists.
  • Complete daily field documentation, including field notes, reports, photographs, chain-of-custody forms, and sampling records to maintain defensible project documentation.
  • Support remediation and abatement projects through contractor oversight, visual inspections, and clearance sampling activities.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot field equipment to ensure accurate and reliable data collection.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and Arizona-specific requirements.
  • Follow company health and safety policies and actively promote a safe work environment.
  • Support emergency response and time-sensitive environmental incidents as required.
  • Collaborate effectively with project managers, industrial hygienists, and other technical staff to support successful project execution.
  • Assist with inventory management, equipment maintenance, and general field operations.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of environmental, industrial hygiene, hazardous materials, construction, or field services experience.
  • Experience conducting environmental sampling, inspections, or field investigations.
  • Familiarity with asbestos, lead-based paint, mold, IAQ, or hazardous materials projects.
  • Ability to accurately document field activities and prepare clear field records.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in team environments.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and perform physically demanding field work.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel regularly to project sites throughout Arizona.

Preferred

  • OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • AHERA Asbestos Building Inspector certification.
  • Arizona Lead Inspector or Risk Assessor certification.
  • Mold or Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) certifications or training.
  • Experience with industrial hygiene sampling, including air monitoring, noise monitoring, and exposure assessments.
  • Experience using field data collection platforms and environmental monitoring equipment.
  • Construction oversight, remediation monitoring, or abatement project experience.
  • Previous consulting or environmental services industry experience.

Physical and Mental Job Qualifications

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Sitting limited to lunch, breaks and driving.
  • A number of duties performed on feet.
  • Walking may be back and forth all day long over terrains that range from flat to hilly, rough and slippery.
  • Able to carry equipment as much as 50 lbs unassisted.
  • Must be able to use hand and fingers to pick up objects, turn on regulators, insert earplugs, use hand tools.
  • Push or pull items.
  • Able to reach above head.
  • Able to bend at the knee.
  • Able to climb ladders to reach high areas or down into tanks or excavations.
  • Able to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Able to squat kneel or crouch in confined spaces when necessary.
  • Must be able to hear warning signals from vehicles, radio transmissions, alarm bells, air leaks etc.
  • Able to taste and smell to detect warning properties of hazardous chemicals.
  • Able to detect burning sensations on skin etc.
  • Vision must be correctable to at least 20:40 with ability to distinguish colors with good depth perception and peripheral vision.

A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $60,000 - $85,000. Any offered salary range is based on a wide array of factors including but not limitedย to skillset,ย experience, training, location, scope of role, management responsibility, etc.
