How much do entry level quantum engineering jobs pay per year?

As of May 28, 2026, the average yearly pay for entry level quantum engineering in the United States is $69,362.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $51,500.00 and $78,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Quantum Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Quantum Engineer, a solid background in physics, mathematics, and computer science—often with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field—is essential. Familiarity with quantum programming languages (such as Qiskit or Cirq), simulation tools, and experience with laboratory equipment or quantum hardware is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help candidates excel in collaborative and research-driven environments. These skills are crucial for successfully contributing to pioneering projects in quantum technology and advancing complex quantum systems.

What types of projects do entry level quantum engineers typically work on in their first year?

As an entry level quantum engineer, you can expect to work on foundational tasks such as setting up and calibrating experimental equipment, assisting in the development and testing of quantum algorithms, and supporting more senior engineers in troubleshooting hardware or software issues. You'll likely collaborate with physicists, software developers, and other engineers as part of a cross-disciplinary team. This role provides valuable hands-on experience with quantum hardware and simulation tools, and offers exposure to both research and product development environments, helping you build a solid foundation for future specialization.

What are entry level quantum engineers?

Entry level quantum engineers are professionals who have recently started their careers in the field of quantum engineering. They typically assist in the development, testing, and implementation of quantum technologies such as quantum computers, sensors, or communication systems. These engineers often work under the guidance of more experienced colleagues, performing tasks like setting up experiments, analyzing data, and troubleshooting equipment. A strong background in physics, mathematics, or engineering is usually required, and they may work in academic, government, or private sector labs.

Are quantum engineers in demand?

Quantum engineers are increasingly in demand as industries explore quantum computing, communication, and sensing technologies. The field requires specialized skills in quantum mechanics, programming, and hardware development, and job growth is expected to continue as quantum technology advances across sectors like defense, finance, and research institutions.

What is the difference between Entry Level Quantum Engineering vs Entry Level Quantum Computing Specialist?

AspectEntry Level Quantum EngineeringEntry Level Quantum Computing Specialist
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Physics, Engineering, or related field; basic knowledge of quantum mechanicsBachelor's in Computer Science, Physics, or related; familiarity with quantum algorithms
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, academiaTech firms, research institutions, startups
Industry UsageDesigning quantum hardware, systems, and experimentsDeveloping quantum algorithms, software, and applications

Entry Level Quantum Engineering focuses on hardware and system design, while Entry Level Quantum Computing Specialists primarily work on software and algorithm development. Both roles require a strong foundation in quantum principles and are common in research and tech industries, but they differ in daily tasks and skill emphasis.

In this role, you will contribute to the design, analysis, and development of mechanical systems and components across various projects. This is an exciting opportunity for recent graduates or those with limited professional experience to build a solid foundation in mechanical engineering principles while working on innovative solutions. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, utilize industry-standard CAD software, and support manufacturing processes to bring ideas from concept to reality. Your enthusiasm and proactive approach will help drive project success and continuous improvement.

Duties

  • Assist in creating detailed mechanical designs using CAD tools such as SolidWorks and Creo, ensuring accuracy and compliance with project specifications.
  • Support the development of schematics, technical drawings, and system layouts following GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) standards.
  • Participate in project scheduling activities to ensure timely completion of design phases and deliverables.
  • Conduct root cause analysis on mechanical issues identified during testing or manufacturing, proposing effective solutions.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to optimize processes, including CNC machining, 3D printing, and assembly procedures.
  • Perform basic finite element analysis (FEA) and simulations using tools like MATLAB, Simulink, or LabVIEW to validate mechanical concepts.
  • Assist in system design activities involving programmable logic controllers (PLCs), Arduino platforms, or other automation components for integrated systems.
  • Contribute to the creation of technical documentation, including schematics, drafting reports, and compliance with ASME codes & standards.
  • Support testing activities by preparing prototypes, conducting measurements, and analyzing data to improve product performance.
  • Engage in continuous learning about quantum engineering applications and advanced manufacturing techniques to enhance project outcomes.

Experience
