What is an entry level probation officer?

Entry level probation officers are professionals who supervise individuals placed on probation instead of serving time in jail or prison. They work to ensure that offenders comply with the terms of their probation, support their rehabilitation, and help reduce the likelihood of reoffending. These officers typically perform tasks such as meeting with probationers, conducting home and workplace visits, preparing reports for courts, and collaborating with community resources. Entry level positions generally require a bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field and may involve training or certification depending on the jurisdiction.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level probation officers during their first year on the job?

Entry-level probation officers often encounter challenges such as managing heavy caseloads, learning to balance administrative tasks with direct client supervision, and adapting to the emotional demands of working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Navigating complex legal protocols and developing effective communication skills with offenders, victims, and law enforcement partners are also key hurdles. Supportive training programs and mentorship from experienced colleagues are typically available to help new officers transition successfully into the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level probation officer?

To thrive as an Entry Level Probation Officer, you need a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, psychology, or a related field, along with a solid understanding of case management and the criminal justice system. Familiarity with case management software and databases, as well as completion of agency-specific training or certification, is often required. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and conflict resolution skills help build rapport with clients and collaborate with law enforcement or social services. These skills are crucial for effectively monitoring probationers, ensuring compliance, and supporting public safety.

Can you work in entry level probation without a degree?

Entry level probation positions typically require a high school diploma or equivalent, and a college degree is not always mandatory. Relevant skills such as communication, problem-solving, and knowledge of legal or correctional procedures can be beneficial, but specific requirements vary by employer and jurisdiction.

Job description

Welcome to JBI

We’re glad you’re interested in joining the JBI team and furthering your career with us. This guide is designed to provide an overview of who we are, what we expect from our team members, and what you can expect during your first 90 days with the company.

WHO WE ARE

Just Better Installs (JBI) is a commercial kitchen installation company founded in 2020 in the great state of Florida.

We take pride in our workmanship, professionalism, and ability to work as a team. Our goal is simple: complete every job safely, efficiently, and to a standard of quality that sets us apart from the competition.

We are looking for dependable, hardworking individuals who take pride in their work and want the opportunity to grow with a company.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS

As a member of the JBI installation team, you will be expected to:

  • Arrive at work on time and fully prepared to work from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend work as required.
  • Be prepared for early team meetups when necessary to ensure the crew arrives at the job site by 7:00 AM.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized job site throughout the workday.
  • Complete assigned tasks efficiently and within the required project schedule.
  • Follow the direction and instructions of the Team Lead and work cooperatively with the rest of the installation crew.
  • Properly maintain, organize, and account for all tools and equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Tape measure
    • Utility/folding knife
    • Gloves
    • Hard hat
    • Eye protection
    • Company-provided tools and equipment
    • Personal power tools and materials
  • Work professionally and cooperatively alongside other MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) contractors and trades on the job site.
  • Communicate any issues, delays, safety concerns, or job-site conditions to the Team Lead or management.
  • Team Leads are responsible for taking detailed photographs of the job site and installed equipment at the end of each workday and providing a daily email update to JBI management.
  • Be willing and able to travel throughout Florida and, when required, out of state in a company-provided vehicle with your assigned team. All applicable travel time will be compensated.
  • Demonstrate the drive and ability to complete assigned work efficiently, correctly, and safely.
  • Take pride in doing the job right the first time rather than cutting corners or creating additional work for the team.

90-DAY PROBATIONARY PERIOD

All new employees will begin with a 90-day probationary period. During this time, JBI will evaluate your performance in several key areas, including:

  • Attendance and punctuality

  • Teamwork and communication
  • Following instructions
  • Job-site safety

At the completion of your first 90 days, your performance will be formally reviewed. Employees who demonstrate strong performance, improvement, reliability, and a commitment to JBI’s standards may be eligible for a pay increase and company benefits, as applicable.

Following the initial 90-day evaluation, employees will generally be evaluated every six months by their supervisor or management.

PAY SCALE & GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES

JBI believes in rewarding employees who demonstrate strong performance, reliability, and a willingness to learn.

Entry-Level / Little to No Experience-

  • Starting pay: $18.00 per hour

Team Leads / Project Managers

Employees who demonstrate exceptional technical ability, leadership, reliability, and project-management skills may have the opportunity to advance into Team Lead or Project Manager positions.

  • Team Lead / Project Manager compensation may reach $30.00+ per hour
  • Qualified individuals may also be considered for salaried management positions (65k - 80k)

Advancement is based on performance, ability, leadership, experience, and the needs of the company.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

Employees are expected to arrive prepared with the basic personal equipment necessary to perform their job safely and effectively.

Required Personal Equipment

  • Tape measure
  • Folding/utility knife
  • Steel-toe work boots

JBI will provide required personal protective equipment (PPE), including:

We prefer employees to have their own basic power tools as they develop within the company. This is not required on your first day.

Installation teams often utilize the Team Lead’s power tools, particularly for new employees. As you gain experience and become more established with the company, you are encouraged to build your own tool inventory.

JBI will provide required disposable materials and consumables needed to perform assigned work.

WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU

JBI is a team-oriented company. Every employee plays a role in the success of the project and the company as a whole.

We expect our team members to be dependable, accountable, willing to learn, respectful of others, and committed to quality workmanship.
