What does an Entry Level Power Systems Engineer do?

An Entry Level Power Systems Engineer assists in designing, analyzing, and maintaining electrical power systems, such as those used in utilities and industrial facilities. Their responsibilities typically include performing load flow studies, supporting the integration of renewable energy sources, and ensuring systems comply with safety and reliability standards. They often work under the supervision of senior engineers while gaining hands-on experience with software tools and industry regulations. This role is ideal for recent graduates with a background in electrical engineering who want to specialize in power systems.

What is the difference between Entry Level Power Systems Engineer vs Power Systems Technician?

AspectEntry Level Power Systems EngineerPower Systems Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related fieldAssociate degree or technical certification in electrical technology
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, and development of power systems; office and fieldworkInstallation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of power systems; primarily fieldwork
Employer & Industry UsageUtilities, engineering firms, renewable energy companiesUtilities, power plants, industrial facilities
Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

The Entry Level Power Systems Engineer focuses on designing and analyzing power systems, requiring a bachelor's degree, while the Power Systems Technician handles installation and maintenance with technical certifications. Both roles are essential in the power industry but differ in responsibilities and qualifications.

What kinds of projects and tasks can I expect as an Entry Level Power Systems Engineer during my first year?

As an Entry Level Power Systems Engineer, you'll typically assist with power system studies, such as load flow, short circuit, and protection coordination analyses. You'll likely work on modeling electrical networks using industry-standard software and prepare technical reports or documentation under the guidance of senior engineers. Expect to collaborate closely with both internal engineering teams and external clients, gaining exposure to utility standards, field data collection, and project meetings. This role provides a strong foundation in both technical and communication skills, setting the stage for future advancement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Power Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Power Systems Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, power system analysis, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as ETAP, PSCAD, or MATLAB, along with knowledge of relevant codes and standards, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork skills help you collaborate with colleagues and convey complex concepts clearly. These abilities are critical for ensuring reliable power system design, safety, and successful project execution in a technically demanding field.

Job description

Power Systems Engineer, Energy Storage

Responsibilities will include:

  • Work with the product and controls design teams to translate power system requirements into site controller and inverter controller specifications, influencing system and plant-level control architecture
  • Design, develop, and validate plant controller functions for battery energy storage systems including voltage regulation, frequency regulation, P-f and Q-V droop control, active/reactive power control loops, and fast frequency response
  • Ensure control algorithms meet utility, ISO, and IEEE requirements including ERCOT interconnection specifications and IEEE 2800 compliance
  • Build and strengthen in-house modeling capabilities for Redwood Energy's products in PSCAD and PSSE, including model validation against field and controller-hardware-in-the-loop behaviors
  • Set up and execute CHIL testing on platforms such as RTDS, OPAL-RT, or Typhoon HIL to validate inverter and site controller performance under grid disturbance and fault scenarios
  • Develop automation tools for PSCAD and PSSE for interconnection studies using Python, C, or C++

 Desired Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering with specialization in power systems and control systems (PhD preferred)
  • Strong foundation in classical and modern control theory including PID tuning, state-space modeling, small-signal stability analysis, and frequency-domain analysis (Bode plots)
  • Expert proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink for control algorithm development and testing
  • Experience developing and validating user-defined inverter or plant controller models in PSCAD and/or PSSE
  • Hands-on experience with inverter-based resource modeling including grid-forming and grid-following control, PLL design, virtual inertia, and droop-based power control
  • Solid understanding of synchronous machine dynamics, excitation and governor systems, and system-level stability concepts (frequency stability, voltage stability, weak grid operation)
  • Experience with real-time simulation and CHIL environments (RTDS, OPAL-RT, Typhoon HIL) is strongly preferred
  • Programming experience in Python, C, or C++ for model automation, controls integration, or testing workflows
  • Experience performing or supporting transmission-level engineering studies such as transient stability, protection coordination, harmonics, and insulation coordination is a plus
  • Familiarity working with utilities, ISOs, or renewable project developers is a plus
