Roundman Job Description

The OSP Crew Groundman is an entry level position on our fiber network construction crew. This position will work on an underground missile and bore crew, installing conduit, pulling conductor, pulling fiber, digging with shovels, repairing wire and operating other heavy equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform manual labor using hand tools, primarily shovels
  • Precise and safe missile operation; able to adapt tooling to ground conditions
  • Perform safe and productive execution of work
  • Use vacuum excavation equipment and perform maintenance
  • Calling in utility locates
  • Pothole utilities in missile path
  • Perform missile operations, check gauges and listen to equipment to assess conditions and to determine the need to adjust or alter equipment
  • Maintain and service equipment as necessary
  • Responsible for all restoration
  • Assist Missile Crew Lead with coordination and completion of close-out packages
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screenings required (motor vehicle, drug, and background)
  • Experience with fiber installs preferred
  • Must work safely and follow all OSHA, and other Federal, State, and local safety regulations and company safety rules and procedures
  • Ability to read design maps is beneficial
  • Can work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to climb ladders and work in confined spaces (e. g., crawl spaces, utility holes)
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activities including, but not limited to: lifting objects weighing over 70 pounds
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Ability to communicate effectively
Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Class Driver License or State Issued ID required
  • 1 year of relevant experience preferred, or an equivalent of education and experience
  • Restoration experience in asphalt and concrete preferred
  • Experience operating vibratory plows beneficial
  • Experience operating mini-excavators beneficial
Working Conditions
  • May be required to work long and unpredictable hours including weekends
  • Working outdoors in all types of weather conditions
  • Bend/squat/kneel/stand frequently
  • Exposure to dust, fluctuating temperatures, and periodic high noise levels
