Distinguishing Characteristics
Facility Operations Assistant 1:
Entry-level; under the general direction of a Facility Operations Assistant 2 or higher-level trades, grounds, warehouse or building management staff, performs a combination of maintenance, grounds, laborer, parking services, custodial duties, and operates motor driven vehicles and equipment. All positions are in the labor jurisdictional class.
Facility Operations Assistant 2:
Working supervisor; under the general direction of higher-level trades, grounds, warehouse or building management staff, supervises multiple Facility Operations Assistants 1, and may supervise Cleaners, Parking Attendants, Supply Assistants, students, volunteers, and inmates. All positions are in the non-competitive jurisdictional class.
Positions that perform full-time semiskilled trades duties are classified in a variety of semiskilled titles such as Maintenance Assistant and various parenthetics; Service & Repair Assistant (HVAC-R); and Service & Repair Assistant (Motor Equipment).

Collects parking fees and prepares reports.

Loads/unloads supplies with hand trucks or pallet jacks.
Maintains storage areas and package tracking.
Assists in mail and office material handling.
Performs grounds maintenance: mowing, fertilizing, snow removal, tree trimming.
Performs light office duties such as filing, copying, and inventory.
Facility Operations Assistant 2
Performs duties of Facility Operations Assistants 1.
Supervises Facility Operations Assistants 1 and other staff, assigns work, ensures standards are met.
Maintains records of labor, materials, and progress reports.
Performs routine replacement and repair of plumbing, steamfitting, and related equipment.
Repairs structural components such as doors, stairs, and windows.
Operates shop tools for woodworking and construction tasks.
Repairs and maintains locks, makes keys, and installs locking systems.
Performs masonry tasks such as patching, plastering, and bricklaying.
Paints interiors and exteriors, including furniture and equipment.
Repairs basic electrical equipment, installs lighting and wiring.
Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and checks safety components.
Assists in mechanical repairs such as replacing exhaust parts or performing oil changes.
Performs engine tune-ups and light mechanical diagnostics.
Assists journey-level trades staff in engine or machinery disassembly/reassembly.
Cuts, welds, and brazes metal using standard equipment.
Operates machine tools like lathes and drills to fabricate parts.
Responds to equipment issues and escalates as needed.
Mixes and applies pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides.
Prunes trees and shrubs using climbing gear and power tools.
Performs full range of supervisory duties including scheduling, evaluations, and approving leave.
Operates various hand/power tools and self-propelled machinery.
May plan landscaping and grounds projects including sketches and labor estimates.
Qualifications
Facility Operations Assistant 1 Labor Class: There are no education or experience qualifications for this class.
Applicants must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and be able to understand and carry out written or oral instructions.
When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated.
Facility Operations Assistant 2
Non-competitive:
one year of service as a Facility Operations Assistant 1 or Motor Vehicle Operator; OR, two years of full-time, verifiable experience in custodial, grounds, or maintenance operation or assisting in a journey-level trade.
When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated.
