Job Summary
Battelle's Advanced Microsystems Solutions team is seeking a Materials Engineering Technician to support laboratory and microscopy workflows through the processing, organization, and preparation of modern microelectronic devices by advanced mechanical and chemical polishing tools, processes, and procedures. The applicant will be a key part of our multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists working on cutting-edge embedded security solutions for microelectronic systems. This position is located in Columbus, OH. Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $50,000-$65,000 per year, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
The technician will work closely with microscopists, engineers, and scientists to support microscopy and materials characterization efforts using custom tools workflows and procedures. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to independently operate specialized tools and processes after training. This role is well-suited for candidates with a technical or machinist background who enjoy developing new process steps and varied technical tasking and working with scientists and engineers.
Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the trust and assurance team to assess the security, reliability, and trustworthiness of electronic devices, integrated circuits, and embedded systems.
  • Be an integral part of an accomplished team of cyber experts in both hardware and software; and will have opportunities to work closely with physicists, material scientists, microscopists, and other scientific experts from across Battelle.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of laboratory equipment including acid, solvent, base, and other hazardous chemical systems.
  • Responsible for training key personnel in chemical processing techniques.
  • Responsible for following established environmental and safety plans for chemical processing and promoting a Safety First culture with Battelle safety representatives.
  • Support semiconductor device forensics and material analysis through chemical processing.
  • Contribute to discussions of strengths and weaknesses of solutions, conclusions and problem approaches.
  • Support preparation of presentations and reports. May be called on to provide input or perform demonstrations during customer visits.
  • Work in a laboratory environment, running tools, collecting data, and maintaining records and procedures.

Key Qualifications
  • Associates degree in Machining or Engineering Technology, or other closely related physical science; or equivalent education and work experience.
  • Have a good understanding of mechanical / chemical lab procedures and some demonstrable lab experience.
  • Be a good follower of directions and a clear communicator of status, issues, and solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to use scientific methods and good engineering practices.
  • Familiarity in any of the following:
    • Mechanical or Chemical processing of test samples and devices
    • Sample preparation or mechanical polishing of samples
  • Sole US citizenship with willingness to obtain and maintain a US security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, keep accurate records, and follow instructions.
  • Experience or knowledge of semiconductor device structure or fabrication processes.
  • Experience or knowledge of high vacuum and / or optical imaging systems.
  • Prior research experience in small scale chemical laboratory.
  • Programming or scripting experience (academic or practical) in Python.
  • Active DoW security clearance.
