POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Georgia Department of Agriculture - Feed & Fertilizer Laboratory is located in Tifton, Georgia, and is a part of the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Laboratory Division.

The Feed & Fertilizer Laboratory is responsible for the testing of animal feed, pet food, and fertilizer samples for the State of Georgia.

The selected candidate must reside in Tift County, GA, or be willing to relocate.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

This is an entry level position. Incumbents at this level may require additional training or experience to gain full proficiency in some or all the job responsibilities.

Under general supervision, this position will be responsible for:

  • Preparing and analyzing feed and fertilizer samples in the Tifton Feed and Fertilizer Laboratory.
  • Assistingin the performance of standard tests and analysis on raw,natural, and processed matrices using prescribed chemical and physical laboratory procedures to determine quantitatively the concentration of a chemical or chemicals in feed and fertilizer products and compliance with legal standards quantitatively.
  • Assists with complicated sample preparations.
  • Conveys and presents information concisely.
  • Enters laboratory test data into laboratory information systems.
  • May be exposed to hazardous or unknown substances.
  • May monitor and record laboratory systems such as refrigerators, ovens, and incubators for compliance with requirements.
  • Operates a variety of laboratory equipment, may calibrate, and make minor repairs.

Other duties as assigned

Physical Demands:

  • May require standing for long periods of time and lifting of 20lbs or more.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the Minimum Qualifications, possess knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • Experience working in a laboratory;
  • Ability to use a variety of pipettes;
  • Ability to determine if instruments are calibrated correctly for use in analysis;
  • Ability to perform analysis;
  • Knowledge of chemicals and procedures in the area of assignment; and/or
  • Instrumental experience including (but not limited to) protein, fat and fiber analysis, HPLC, UV Colorimetric or ICP spectrophotometry.
