Job Summary
The Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) is responsible for providing safe, family-centered patient care by demonstrating specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in breastfeeding and human lactation. This role supports expectant and postpartum families through education, assessment, and individualized care planning to promote successful breastfeeding outcomes.

Job Specific Responsibilities
• Provide safe, family-centered care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating individualized lactation care plans for breastfeeding and pumping patients.
• Provide out-patient lactation consultations in person or by telephone, including follow-up support and referrals to appropriate programs and community resources.
• Educate patients and families on breastfeeding techniques, and pumping techniques including but not limited to proper use, cleaning, and maintenance of breast pumps and breastfeeding related supplies.
• Serves as breastfeeding advocate, supporting evidence-based practices and informed decision-making.
• Collaborate with patients, families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary healthcare team members to provide comprehensive lactation support during prenatal and postpartum periods.
• Deliver direct patient care services, including assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation of outcomes related to lactation.
• Participate in collaboration with the healthcare team providing discharge education on topics such as breast pumps, donor milk, and any evidence-based lactation practices or resources.
• Support and promote the Texas Ten Step initiative and evidence-based practices for successful breastfeeding.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record.
• All other assigned duties as requested.
Education and Experience
• High School Diploma or GED
Required Licensures/Certifications/Registrations
• Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Excellent customer service skills; Ability to communicate effectively in English (verbal and written).
• Ability to quickly learn and adapt to electronic health record systems for medical documentation.
• Knowledge of basic medical terminology and abbreviations.
Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships
This role primarily interacts with expectant or post-partum mothers, nursing staff, medical providers, vendors for breastfeeding supplies, and community resources involved with patient care.
Physical Requirements:
Occasionally exerts up to 20 lbs. exerts a small amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects. Frequently involves walking, standing and sitting throughout the shift.
Environmental/Working Conditions
Office hours are typically from 8am-12am, including weekdays, weekends, and some holidays. Participation in an 8-hour on-call phone rotation as required. Primarily an indoor hospital setting.
