What is an entry level human robot interaction job?

An entry level human-robot interaction (HRI) job typically involves working with robots and technologies that interact directly with humans. These roles may include tasks such as designing interfaces, conducting user studies, programming robot behaviors, or analyzing how people and robots communicate. Entry-level HRI professionals often work on interdisciplinary teams with engineers, designers, and psychologists to create safer and more intuitive robot systems. Most positions require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, robotics, psychology, or a related field, and some experience with programming or usability research.

What are some typical projects and collaborative opportunities for an entry level human robot interaction professional?

Entry-level professionals in Human Robot Interaction often contribute to interdisciplinary projects that involve designing, testing, and refining how humans interact with robots in various settings. You’ll likely work alongside engineers, designers, and psychologists to conduct user studies, analyze feedback, and improve robot interfaces or behaviors. Collaboration is a key aspect of the role, as HRI teams frequently hold brainstorming sessions and joint problem-solving meetings to address usability challenges. This environment provides excellent opportunities to learn from experienced colleagues and develop a well-rounded skill set in both technical and human-centered aspects of robotics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level human robot interaction specialist?

To thrive in an Entry Level Human Robot Interaction (HRI) role, you typically need a background in computer science, cognitive science, human-computer interaction, or a related field, along with basic programming and research skills. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or C++, experience with robotics platforms (such as ROS), and knowledge of user experience design tools are commonly required. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities help you effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and understand user needs. These skills ensure that you can contribute to the development of intuitive, user-friendly robotic systems that address real-world challenges.

Job description

Machine Learning Engineer — Voice & Embodied Intelligence

Company: IntBot Inc.

Location: San Jose, CA

Employment Type: Full-time, on-site

Compensation: Competitive salary + equity

About IntBot

In ten years, millions of robots will coexist with humans. But coexistence requires more than physical capability — it requires social intelligence.

IntBot is building socially intelligent humanoid robots for real-world service environments, including hotels, airports, conferences, public venues, and commercial lobbies. Our robots greet people, hold conversations, answer questions, understand context, express personality, and interact naturally in dynamic human environments.

Our humanoid robots have already been deployed in real commercial settings, including hospitality environments, major events such as NVIDIA GTC, and San José Mineta International Airport. Every deployment gives us real-world interaction data and helps us improve our models, systems, and product experience.

We are now looking for strong machine learning engineers to help build the intelligence layer behind interactive embodied AI.

About the Role

We are seeking a Machine Learning Engineer — Voice & Embodied Intelligence to help develop, evaluate, and deploy the ML systems that power real-time human-robot interaction.

This role is broader than a traditional AI agent role. You will work across voice AI, multimodal models, dialogue systems, perception, evaluation, data pipelines, and embodied interaction. The goal is to make humanoid robots that can understand people, respond naturally, adapt to context, and operate reliably in real-world environments.

You will work closely with robotics, product, infrastructure, and deployment teams to bring ML systems from research prototypes into production robots. The ideal candidate is comfortable with modern ML systems, fast iteration, production constraints, and the messy reality of deploying AI in physical environments.

What You Will Do

  • Build and improve real-time voice interaction systems for humanoid robots, including speech understanding, response generation, turn-taking, and interruptions.
  • Integrate LLMs, speech models, vision models, and internal tools into reliable robot interaction pipelines.
  • Use deployment data to identify failure cases, improve prompts or models, and make the system more robust in real environments.
  • Build evaluation tools for conversation quality, latency, reliability, task success, and user experience.
  • Work with robotics, product, and deployment teams to connect AI behavior with robot actions, customer workflows, and real-world constraints.
  • Help maintain and improve the ML infrastructure behind IntEngine, including data pipelines, monitoring, model evaluation, and production debugging.
  • Test and deploy AI systems on real robots in hotels, airports, events, and public spaces.

What We Are Looking For

Required

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong programming skills in Python.
  • Hands-on experience building, training, adapting, evaluating, or deploying machine learning systems.
  • Familiarity with modern ML frameworks such as PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow, or similar tools.
  • Strong engineering judgment and ability to build systems that are reliable, debuggable, and maintainable.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with robotics, product, design, and deployment teams.
  • Comfort operating in a fast-paced startup environment with ambiguity and rapid iteration.
  • Willingness to work on-site in San Jose, CA.

Preferred

  • Experience with real-time voice systems, including ASR, TTS, streaming audio, voice activity detection, turn-taking, or interruption handling.
  • Experience with OpenAI APIs, Realtime models, tool use, function calling, RAG, memory systems, or custom agent architectures.
  • Experience with multimodal AI systems involving language, vision, audio, or sensor data.
  • Experience fine-tuning, evaluating, or deploying open-source LLMs, VLMs, or speech models.
  • Experience with production ML systems, including data pipelines, model evaluation, observability, inference optimization, and A/B testing.
  • Experience with robotics, human-robot interaction, embodied AI, or edge/cloud systems.
  • Familiarity with WebRTC, streaming systems, message queues, APIs, Docker, Kubernetes, or cloud infrastructure.
  • Contributions to open-source ML, AI agent, voice AI, or robotics projects.

Why Join IntBot

  • Work on AI systems that do not just live in a chat window — they speak, move, and interact with real people in physical spaces.
  • Help build the intelligence layer for humanoid robots already deployed in real commercial environments.
  • Work on a rare combination of voice AI, multimodal models, robotics, product experience, and real-world deployment.
  • Learn from live human-robot interaction data across hotels, airports, events, and public spaces.
  • Join an early-stage robotics company where your work can directly shape the product, platform, and technical direction.
  • Build frontier AI systems with immediate real-world feedback.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary
  • Equity / stock options
  • Health insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Paid time off
  • Relocation assistance
  • On-site team lunches and robot demos
